Marvelous March

We are nearing the last 9 weeks of fourth grade at a rapid pace.  Please keep the following in mind for the month of March:

* Friday, March 6th is Family Fit Night.

* Thursday, March 19th report cards go home.  Sign and return the white card in the envelope.

* Wednesday April 1st:  Last day to turn in Huntsville field trip money.

As we wrap up the third nine weeks we'll have some final testing before we move on.  Be on the look out for study guides and test dates.

You are now able to access the math and social studies texts on-line.  The math website is www.eharcourtschool.com.  Your students username and password will be sent home tomorrow.  The social studies site is www.eduplace.com/eservices.   Username is cobbstudent4 and the password is password.  The science link is soon to follow.

I will update you soon regarding the curriculum for the remaining nine weeks.

Enjoy the beautiful weather!

Furiously Fast February

I'd like to thank all of you for meeting with me to discuss your child's academic accomplishments during conference week.  It was nice to see you and personally communicate to you all that has been happening in fourth grade.  Please call, email or write to me with any questions, comments or concerns regarding your child.  Communication is key!

We are in the midst of our Revolutionary War unit.  They all did a wonderful job on their "Stamp Act" projects in class.  They are currently displayed outside our room but will make their way home shortly.  We will continue to learn about the challenges we faced as a new nation and the importance of Americans sharing certain democratic beliefs, both personal and civic.  Towards the end of these nine weeks we'll begin our unit on Westward Expansion.

We are all simply loving learning about our solar system.  We worked hard on making a replica and hanging it in the hall.  We've studied how the position and motion of the earth in the solar system helps to determine the sequence of the phases of the moon.  We also learned what our solar system is made up of, why a year is 365 days, why a day consists of 24 hours and the reason for the seasons.  Our next topics will be stars, star patterns, more about the planets and constellations.

Math is all about fractions and decimals.  This can be a tricky concept so we are putting lots of effort into learning it.  By the time this nine weeks is through we'll be able to add and subtract fractions with common denominators, simplify fractions, convert improper fractions into mixed numbers, convert mixed numbers into improper fractions, and add and subtract decimal fractions.  Soon we'll be learning how to represent and interpret mathematical relationships in quantitative expressions, use standard and metric units of measure to weigh objects and then compare the two, and use line, bar and pictographs to display data.  PLEASE continue to practice basic multiplication and division with your child at home.  I cannot stress enough the importance of your cld knowing their basic facts.

Our reading lessons have consisted of historical fiction books that are related to our Social Studies unit.  Not all children read the same books and most of the work is done in class but be sure to ask them about what they're reading.  We're going to be adding some non-fiction Science books to our reading curriculum as well.  Please be sure your child is continuing to read at home each night and the books they're choosing are on their level.  Since we are reading for information we are also writing for information.  Our Social Studies project is one example of this.

Some reminders for the month:

*2/4 Early Release

2/5 Picture Day

2/12 Parent Thinking Map training at 6pm. in the Media Center

2/13 Box contest

2/16 President's Day/No School for children

2/20 2nd Annual Spaghetti Dinner and Teacher Spelling Bee

We are in need of tissues, snacks, and glue sticks.

I'd like to thank Mrs. Delucca in advance for volunteering to be our Junior Achievement teacher.  We cannot wait to have her be a part of our class.

On-line CRCT practice tests will be available soon so please take advantage of them.  There are nights where they will be assigned as homework as well so keep an eye out.

Enjoy the month and I hope to see you at the spaghetti dinner.

I'd like to thank all of you that made dinners for my family, and sent gifts, cards and well-wishes to me during my absence.  It was all greatly appreciated and very thoughtful.  Jeannine Brock went above and beyond in her efforts to make sure my family was taken care of during this time.  Jeannine, you're the best!  Miss Takash helped out tremendously while I was recuperating as well and all of the children did an excellent job of being respectful and self-controlled in my absence.  I am so grateful to work with and teach such a wonderful group of people and children.

Have a Happy Holiday Season and a healthy New Year!

October

Hello everyone!  I hope this finds all of you enjoying the nice weather we've been having.  We have lots of important dates and new curriculum to discuss.  Be on the lookout for many flyers that will be coming home throughout the month of October that will remind us of all the "happenings" here at Mt. View.

As of Tuesday, September 30th we are officially done with our study of water and weather!  We will begin learning about Light and Sound at the beginning of the next nine weeks.  There will be a S.S. test next Tuesday, October 7th on map skills and we are going to be jumping right into our study of Native American Cultures.  This is a two week unit so we'll test on or around the 21st of October.  We finished our Reading Contract work last Friday.  I am so impressed by the power point presentations, flip books, mini books, graphs, crosswords, drawings and all other projects that were completed.  Next week we'll begin reading Sign of the Beaver.  As of right now I have only received two copies.  If I don't receive more it will be very difficult to move as quickly through these lessons as I'd like as we will have to share.  If you are able to purchase a copy for the class or even for your child to use throughout the lessons it would be extremely helpful and appreciated.  We began our first official narrative writing piece today.  We will complete these through implementing the writing process by next Tuesday.  So, did you enjoy area models?  The students did such a great job with them.  They caught on so quickly and seemed to enjoy it.  We began learning about partial products today and will have a quiz on Friday.  Next we'll begin operations of multiplication and division.  Please be sure to review your child's math journal with them and use the correct vocabulary when discussing math.  I will let you know of any upcoming projects, tests, etc.

Here are some important dates to remember:

*Friday, October 3rd:  Sally Foster Orders are due and Movie on the Mount

*Monday, October 6th: $1.00 due for Cobb County Employee Appreciation Week (Info is being sent home on Tuesday, September 30th)

*Friday, October 17th: World of Coke Field trip; I've had many parents offer to chaperone.  I will let you know by Friday, October 3rd.  We are only able to take four chaperones so if you are not chosen then I will make certain that you are able to attend another field trip.  You also have the option of meeting us there and paying at the door.  Please be advised that if you do ride the bus with us you must send in your payment of $15 by Monday, October 6th

*Saturday,October 25th: Mountain View Fall Festival 12-3

Have a fabulous week and let me know if you have any questions, comments or concerns.  I'll be in touch.

Email Addresses

Hello again!

Please send your email address to our Room Mom, Mrs. Brock, so that she can contact you.  Her address is: jeannine_brock@hotmail.com

Week of September 15th

I'd like to thank Mrs. Brock and Mrs. Glunn for bringing in items for our economics ice cream sundaes.  They were excellent scoopers.  Be on the lookout for them the next time you visit Bruesters.  Thanks to those of you that sent in goodies as well.

I received a notification from our Social Studies textbook publisher today that they are working out the kinks.  As soon as they've got it figured out I will work on making it available to you on-line.  Mrs. Brock will be working on the Science and Math texts just as soon as I get the information to her.

Wow, last week was quite busy with the tests that we had and our collaborative planning day.  This week will be busy but without so many tests. Remember we have early release tomorrow.  Also, in case you are planning a doctor's appointment for your child our specials schedule will be altered from the 17th-26th due to third and fifth grade testing.  We will attend specials from 12:40-1:20 on those dates.

We have moved onto our study of weather in Science.  Today we set up a weather station and made observations.  We will be tracking the weather for the rest of the week using many tools. Ask your child what a thermometer, barometer, anemometer, hygrometer, wind vane and a rain gauge are.  We'll be using all of those tools each day.  Maybe it will inspire someone to become a Meteorologist.

A brief unit on map skills will begin on Thursday.  Most of this is review so we will quickly move onto Native Americans.  As part of this unit the fourth grade has decided to use Sign of the Beaver as a reading supplement.  If you have a copy at home or would like to purchase one to donate for this lesson it would be greatly appreciated.  As of right now I only have 6 so we really are in need of some more.  Please let me know if you will be sending a book in as we will begin this until next week.

Multiplication is up next in Math.  EVERYONE should be very fluent in reciting their basic facts.  Please practice each night by using flashcards with your child.  If they struggle with the basic facts it will impede their progress in other areas of multiplication greatly.  Partial Products and Area Models are right around the corner and knowing their facts is very important.

We began our reading contracts today.  You will find these in the Science part of your child's binder.  All of the work will be completed in school.  This will take about two weeks.  As you will see there are negotiable (choose one), nonnegotiable (must be completed) and accelerated (time permitting) activities.  They will receive a grade on each of the areas.  The children are really excited about this as it gives them an opportunity to show what they've learned through alternative assessment.

Remember to go to the East Cobber Parade on Saturday to show your support for Kathy Kindel, Mountain View's TOTY.  I'll be there and would love to see all of my students and their families.

Have a great week!

Suzanne Wykes

Thursday, September 11

Good morning everyone! I just wanted to let you all know that I will be working on linking the texts over the weekend. This is a task that will take numberous hours so please bear with me if it isn't done until the end of next week. Mrs. Brock has offerred to help so hopefully we'll be able to get it done more quickly. Remember that we have a S.S. test tomorrow. Use the study guide to assure success. We have an early release day next Tuesday, September 16th. It's been a busy week so I hope you and your children have a relaxing weekend. Suzanne C. Wykes

September News and Notes

Welcome to September,

Let me begin by saying I enjoyed meeting with all of you that were able to attend Curriculum Night.  I hope you found it to be informative and insightful.  As I stated that evening, if you have any questions, comments or concerns regarding your child please contact me through my school email, Suzanne.Wykes@cobbk12.org, by phone or write me a message in the agenda.  I will be sure to return your message as promptly as possible.

We have a very busy week ahead of us.  A Science study guide was sent home last Friday and the test is on Thursday.  We have our second WW test tomorrow and a Social Studies test on Friday.  The study guide was handed out today.  Look for it in their binder or in their communication folder.  Please help your children prepare for these tests throughout the week.  We've gone over all of the information in class and will continue to do so until the day of each test.  I'm confident that all will do well.

As requested by some I sent home each child's SRI and STAR reports.  If you didn't receive them please let me know and I'll send another.  You also received the Performing Arts permission form.  This did not go home earlier so those of you that returned one it must have been from another child in the home.  They only send a few class sets home at a time so it's easier to keep track of those that are returned.

I just wanted to remind you to subscribe to my blog.  You can do so by going to the Mountain View website and once you've pulled up my page click on "receive email updates".  I will post messages here on a weekly basis.  I am in the process of linking our Social Studies and Science texts and hope to have this all set for you by the week's end.

     Have a great week!

Suzanne C. Wykes
