PARENTS

We have about 30 days of school left. We can not believe it. The school year has flown by. In math we will be studying about addition, subtraction, and then we will review all of our math skills.  In Science, we will be studying about plants, insects, and baby animals.

Reminders

Parents, I know that you are already making your summer plans.  Please do not forget to set aside JUST 30 minutes a day to work on your child’s academics.  Please have your child write sentences 2-4 times a week, about 2-4 sentences each time.  The children also need to be reading and read to for at least 30-min. everyday.  Anything that you do this summer will help your child remember what he or she learned this year, which will make the transition to 1st grade easier.

March

PARENTS

We are getting closer to the end of school; this is the time of the year that Mrs.Bailey and I really enjoy.  The children are capable of doing so much more in school.  For the next couple of weeks we will be studying about money (identifying coins and counting using pennies, nickels and dimes).  After money we will start to learn about addition and then subtraction.

I hope you have noticed we have been doing a lot more writing since winter break. At home please continue to work with your child on their writing skills 2 or 3 days a week (we are writing about 3 sentences in class).  Also remember to have your child read to you every night.  However, you still need to read to them some nights. We have just learned about telling time.  Please practice telling time at home with your child.  Your child should be able to tell time to the hour and the half-hour.  We did learn a little about the rest of the minutes (counting by 5).

Reminders

We are having a lot of children coming to school hungry.  Please make sure that you give them a GOOD breakfast in the morning.  Also we are still having trouble with snacks. Please remember each day to pack your child a HEALTHY snack.  Lastly, I hope that you have enjoyed the BOOK IN THE BAG program. This is one of the great ways to help your child with their reading (still do what is mentioned above with different books).  When your child is able to read the book by themselves, please return it.  It might take a day or two for us to assign a new one.  Thanks for you help!!

Needed

We are still running a little low on some items.

-Glues sticks

-Outside chalk

-Baby wipes

January

Parents, I hope you enjoyed the winter break. It is already mid-January and it will be Spring Break and then , the End of the School Year will be here before you know it. Thanks to our FOUNDATION, we now have a computer lab teacher. We are all very glad about this, however this does affect our Special Schedule. We are now on a 6 day rotation for Special (started today). Our Special Schedule is as follows: PE, Counselor/Media Center, Art, PE, Computer Lab, and Music. This is a rotating schedule, it repeats every 6 days. If you have questions about it please let me know. Mrs. Bailey will put the Special Schedule in the Behavior Chart, starting Next week.

Also, as you know, Heather and I are expecting out new baby (Andrew Worth Cooper) reeeaaaallllllyyyy sooooooon. I am planning on taking 2 weeks off to spend time with my family. However, I am planing to come to work for conferences. I will just take a half day off for that week. If there are any changes to that Mrs. Bailey or I will let you know. Just be assured that we will have a conference at sometime there after. The conference forms will be sent out this Friday.

Lastly, we do have cases of lice in the classroom. The children will continue to put their belongings in bags and we will continue not to have quite time, so please do not bring in towels until this is cleared.

Thanks for your help and understanding. cooper

December

PARENTS

As you are aware there is a child or children that are affected by lice in our classroom. Our nurse is handling the situation. There are two steps in the classroom that I am taking to help prevent the spread of this.

1.  We are bagging up the children’s coats and book bags.

2.      We are having quite time at our tables (so we do not need the      towels).

I want to say thanks to Mrs. Brown and Mrs. Riley for bringing in the special bags that we use to store our items.  If you have any other concerns, please Email me.

The Holiday season is here.  The kids are already very excited (just ask any Kindergarten teacher).  In math we have just started to learn about measurement (short, tall, length, measuring with string and cubes, longer and shorter).  We will then learn about ordinal numbers up to 10. In the next 3 weeks we will also be doing different holiday activities. On Thursday, the 21st we are having some special holiday centers.  Then on that, Friday the whole school is going to be singing songs together at an assembly.  Have a great and safe Holiday.

Please remember to read to your child everyday during the break and them to you.  Also have them write some sentences. Over the break we do not want to lose what we have learned.

Reminders

Parents we are having a lot of students not bringing in their snacks to school.  I know it is a busy time of the year, but please do your best to remember to pack a HEALTHY snack for your child.  Also to let you know I am out of snacks for the classroom if you would like to donate some classroom snacks please let me know.  It would be greatly appreciated.

Lastly, we do go outside everyday for recess. Please make sure your child is dressed accordingly for the weather and that they bring a coat.

Self Help

After the winter break we the teachers will not be tying shoes, zipping or unzipping, buttoning, opening milk cartoons, putting on jackets or sweaters, and etc….  If your child needs assistance with these, please work with them over the break.  We are trying to make them as independent as possible, as well as solving their own problems.  Velcro is not the solution to tying shoes. Tying shoes is a life skill that they need to know how to do.  Also if your child does not know their left and their right hands please work with them. Thanks for your help!!!

November

PARENTS

The school year is going quick.  It will be Thanksgiving before we know it.  Then the winter Holidays will be here very shortly after that.  I am pleased with how the class is progressing.  I am starting to really work on the children’s writing.  I am putting pressure on them to spell phonically spelled words and use finger spacing between words.  I am also starting to introduce the sight/dolch words.  After we study the words I expect these words to be spelled correctly in their writing.   I will be sending a list of these 100 words home after the winter break so you can work on them at home also.

We are finishing up our pattern unit.  However, please continue to make patterns at home or point them out when you see them. Patterns are still a big theme over the school year.  Over the next month we will study about Measuring (length, weight, capacity, and bar graphs) and shapes (spheres, cubes,).  We will also be studying about maps and map keys, Nutrition (food pyramid), and Thanksgiving.

As always, we will be studying our phonics.  Please make sure that your child can now identify all the letters in the alphabet, lower and upper case and knows most of the letter sounds.

Self Help

October

PARENTS

The class is really progressing well.   The children are almost used to the routine of school and my behavior expectations for them.  This week and next week we will studying  patterns (ABA, AABB, ABBC, and so on), apples, seasons, and landforms/maps. Thank you to all of the parents who are volunteering to come in and help us at centers.  For your information, when you come in to help, I try to not put you with your child (but it does happen sometimes). I do this because this is a time to help all of children in the class. Thanks for your help.

.

At Home

Please continue to work with your child on recognizing the alphabet letters or sounds.  Also work on making and identifying patterns (AB, ABC, and ABBC).  You can make patterns with almost anything (Lego’s, markers, shapes, blocks, or candy).  We have also worked on our phone numbers, please continue to work on your phone number and address.  Lastly, please continue to work on recognizing the color words.

Reminders

There are 3 things that you need to be doing EVERY night with the RED FOLDER:

1.      Look at all of the papers- there are notes and information about what is going on in the

school and in the classroom.  MOST IMPORTANTLY, your child’s work for the day

is in the folder.  This is a great way to review the day with your child (to see what we

     are doing in the classroom).

Also to see how your child is improving or to see if your child needs additional help.

2.      Please initial your child’s behavior square every night and talk to him or her accordingly.

3.      Any notes, money, permission slips, and ANYTHING that I need to know or needs to

be returned to me goes in the red folder.   Mrs. Bailey or I check this everyday.

September

PARENTS

The school year is off to a great start. The children have almost mastered the routine of school and their new environment. It was great to see all of the parents that showed up for Curriculum Night. If you have any questions about Curriculum Night or any other concerns please let me know. There are some items that I need to mention from Curriculum Night. The first is "Life Skills." These are skills such as TYING shoes, Zipping, buckling, and ECT. Please start to teach these skills at home, these are skills that your child needs to know. The other item is Mystery Reader. On Fridays I ask that parents come in to read 2 or 3 short books to the class after lunch, usually from 10:50 – 11:15. Please join us for lunch. Lastly, please check the Red Take Home Folder every night for papers, notes, and your child’s daily work. These papers should be taken out every night. Also please sign the behavior square nightly.

Room Mom

Lauren Riley will be our room mom this year. She is about to start working on the center schedule volunteer list, for October. Please look for information from her soon.
