Language Arts
In Language Arts we will continue to identify basic elements of fiction, nonfiction, drama, and poetry. We will also continue to compare and contrast the plot, setting, and characters within and between texts. We will continue throughout the nine weeks to work on comprehension strategies like making connections and predictions, inferring, questioning, visualizing, and recalling explicit facts. Students are visiting the media center and have a reading folder where they can record information on their books. Please continue to monitor reading logs at home.
Spelling: We will begin Sort 4. We will identify r-influenced vowel spelling patterns. We will identify and sort words with ar, ir, or, and ur. The following week we will work with Sort 5 as we continue to identify r-influenced vowel spelling patterns. We will identify and sort words with are, ire, ore, ure, air, or, and ear. The sort 4 test will be this Friday.
Grammar: We will be reviewing antonyms, synonyms, and homonyms. Students will be applying their knowledge through the use of analogies. We will continue to review the types of sentences (declarative, interrogative, exclamatory, and imperative). Students will be completing a sort project this week in class for sentence types. We will also continue to study complete and simple subjects and predicates. We will continue our study of nouns singular and plural/common and proper as we complete our capitalization project. We will be reviewing prefixes, suffixes, and root words during guided reading.
Writing: What is a personal narrative? We will be reading and analyzing personal narratives. We will be using creative story starters to develop ideas for our own personal narratives. I will have students ask parents for ideas when we start to develop our own stories.
Math
In guided math we will continue to work on adding and subtracting three and four digit numbers with regrouping, counting back change, elapsed time to the full and half hour, estimation and word problems. We will also learn the properties of addition and practice rules for input/output boxes. While mastering all that, we will start practicing multiplication;) It is very important to help and check homework because this is how we prepare for math assessments.
Social Studies
Students will continue to learn about the influences of ancient Greece on the United States. This week we will finish our Venn Diagrams for Direct and Representative Democracy and study the influence of Greece on modern day Olympics. I will let you know in the agenda when additional study information and guide is sent home. Please review longitude, latitude, Prime Meridian, Equator, and location of Greece.
Science
Students will continue their exciting study of rocks and minerals. I will be sending home their rock sort activity on Monday.
Behavior forms will now be located on the back of the green folder. If I need to record something, I will write a note on the back of the form.
If you would like to volunteer to help with math centers or be a mystery reader, please let me know. Mrs. Carlson has been copying for us and I greatly appreciate it. If anyone else would like to copy, please email me.
