In math we will be working on data and graphing.

Reading, Writing, and Social Studies: We will be working on the Living Museum until the 20th.  We are using our research to write our rough drafts now and will be working on our final copies this week, as well as our speeches. Next week students will need to focus on practicing their speeches at home so they will know them for the 20th. Students will also be working on a biography poem, timeline, and portrait of their famous person.

April

I hope everyone had a great break!  We have some important dates coming up and I wanted to remind everyone.

April 21st -27th is CRCT testing and all students will need a healthy breakfast and plenty of sleep.  Please remember the no visitor past the office request during this important testing time.  Also, please make sure your child arrives in time in the morning to get settled in before testing begins. We have been practicing in class, but I would still like for students to complete practice tests at home if at all possible.

High Touch High Tech on Heat will be this week, and you have already paid and given permission. We will be studying heat this week in science.

In social studies we will continue our study of famous Americans focusing on Lyndon B. Johnson.  Also, look for the Living Museum packet that was sent home today with information about our upcoming event in May.

In math, we will continue to work on long division and multiplication, as well as, graphing.

In reading, we will be practicing for the CRCT by discussing elements of a story.

We are continuing to work hard on all of our standards so that we will be ready for the CRCT.  I hope everyone is practicing at home. You should try to take a test each week if possible.  We have exciting curriculum to cover this last nine weeks.

Math-  In math we are finishing up our measurement and fractions unit.  For the next nine weeks we will be extending multiplication and division. Please continue to practice your multiplication facts.

Reading- We will be working on our study of famous people,as well as, writing and reading poetry. Please continue to have your child read each night and fill out his or her reading log.

Language Arts - We will be working on comma usage and conventions/punctuation rules. We will continue to work on Wordly Wise.

Writing - Our writing genre will be narrative. Students usually enjoy the story writing process. We will continue to discuss narrative elements while working in this genre.

Science- Students will be investigating magnets and how they affect other magnets and common objects.

Social Studies - Students will be discussing communities around the world. Students will discuss the lives of Americans who expanded people's rights and freedoms in a democracy.

Here is a list of all the websites you can visit to access online textbooks.  Please remember that the textbooks are merely a resource for our curriculum. Look for a slip of paper stapled in your child's agenda on Monday, March 9 with the necessary usernames and passwords for each site.

Thank you so much for your time and effort this past week.  I enjoyed speaking with all of you, and I am looking forward to the rest of a successful school year.  Please feel free to continue to contact me with all questions and concerns.

Monday, February 16th: No school for students, Staff Workday

In Math this month, we will continue to study measurement, area, and perimeter.  Please watch for reinforcement activities and continue to help your child at home.

In Reading we are studying fictional text.  We have begun a novel study of Mr. Popper's Penguins and will be focusing on strategies that help us comprehend fictional text.

We will be working on persuasive writing this nine weeks and students will try to persuade me to get a class pet. We will also focus on adjective and adverbs during language arts.

We are still working on our habitat unit but will be sending home a study guide next week. Our next unit will be social studies ,and we will be studying Frederick Douglass. Please watch for bonus project opportunity which will be sent home in the communication folder.

Junior Achievement will begin next Tuesday, and we would like to thank Mrs. Bordas (Luke's mom) for volunteering to teach it for us. There are five lessons that will be taught one hour each week.

Finally, don't forget CRCT practice.  We have teacher assigned tests online and would like your child to practice.  If you have difficulty, let us know.

Happy New Year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday.  We have a lot to accomplish this nine weeks and students are going to love all of the fun curriculum. 

Here are some important dates for the month:

Tuesday, 1/6: first day of the third nine weeks

Friday,1/9:  field trip to Fernbank

Monday,1/19:  no school - Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Monday 1/26 - Friday 1/30:  Conferences - Please sign and return conference letters that come home on Tuesday January 6th.  Please review them and return the bottom half letting us know the time and date will work for you. Please be aware that siblings have been scheduled back to back for your convenience so changes might involve you conferencing on more than one day. It is difficult to schedule back to back time slots with other grade levels. Report cards for the second nine weeks will be given out during conferences.

This nine weeks we will be studying fractions, decimals, and measurement in math.We will study We will be reading in the fiction genre and working on persuasive writing.We will begin our study of historical figures with Paul Revere and will be studying habitats in science. We will also begin cursive!!!!!!!!

Please make sure you continue to check your child's agenda and reading log each night. Students will earn money for getting both signed.

Just a few reminders for all. Please be sure to review homework packets with your child before returning them to school. Also, please check your child's homework during the week. Everyone is doing a great job on the reading log. Keep up the hard work!!!!!

Math: This week and next, we will continue learning about Geometry (plane shapes, angles, three types of triangles).  We will continue to take  Multiplication timed tests (if your child did not pass certain test, he/she will have the opportunity to retake them).  We will have a post-test on this nine weeks on Wednesday, December 17.

Reading

and Writing: How do we write using facts and information? How do we read and comprehend informational text? We will be discussing how to write using informational text.  We will have a writing assessment next Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday.  Students have been researching fossils and will write a multi-paragraph informational essay. 

 

Science:  We will finish our fossil unit this week so please study for our test which will be next Wednesday. We sent the study guide home on Tuesday. Next week we will begin a social studies unit on famous people in history. We will begin with Paul Revere.

Wow, the year is flying by and I am enjoying our time together so much. We have a lot planned for the remainder of the nine weeks.  Please feel free to email me with additional questions.

Math: We will continue working on our multiplication tables and timed tests.  Remember students earn a bead for passing each one.  If your child did not pass certain tests, he/she will have the opportunity to retake them.   I sent a letter on Friday letting you know where we are with multiplication. Reading and Language Arts: How do we write using facts and information? How do we read and comprehend informational text?  Guided reading skill: finding the main idea.  We will start a text features project next week.  If you have any old children’s magazines, please send them in.  Students will need magazines for their projects. In the area of grammar we will be reviewing singular and plural nouns. Weekly spelling words can be found in the agenda.

 Social Studies:  We are studying the three branches of government. We will continue to work on our government projects demonstrating our knowledge of the three branches of the federal government and their responsibilities. We will also cover levels for state and local government.  Please check agendas each night so that you will know when study guides come home and when we are testing on this unit.

Science:  Our study of fossils will begin after the government unit.

Please be aware that two field trip forms came home on Friday.  Since they are close together, we thought it would be easier for parents to do it all at once.  Make sure to use the attached envelope, and write the information on the front.  I will need parent signatures on both forms.

October

I can't believe it is already October! Report cards will be coming home soon and students have worked really hard. We plan on having our class auction next week.  Please look for the flyer to come home soon.  Students are still reading to get on the AR Wall.  Some of us have made it!!! Don't forget that students should be reading twenty minutes each night and recording a two sentence summary in their reading log. 

It is time for multiplication, so please start practicing at home.  We will be reviewing concepts, and learning strategies and multiplication tables.  Please practice flash cards at home!

Reading for this nine weeks will be informational text. We will also be working on informational writing. After we complete our unit on soil, we will begin our government unit.  What an exciting time to learn about government!

The voluntary donation of a healthy snack, like granola bars, fruit, and small boxes of raisins for the firefighters may be turned in on Wednesday, October 8th or Thursday, October 9th. 

Don't forget the Fall Festival on October 25th. A blue flyer came home for advance ticket purchase!!

Dear Parents:

Thank you for a successful curriculum night.  I hope those of you who did not get to attend will feel free to contact us for any information that you might need.  Please send in the address form for our room mothers so that they can get a class list together for us.

In math this month we will be working on adding and subtracting three and four digit numbers, as well as, elapsed time.  Please continue to complete math homework with your child each night when it is sent. I often include extra practice if I know students are having difficulty.

In reading we will continue to work on reading strategies and responding to literature. During guided reading groups, we are building vocabulary, working on comprehension, and making connections. We are practicing identification of key words in questions and reading passages.

Our Science unit on rocks and minerals will begin Tuesday!!!! We are all very excited, and students are already collecting rocks.  Students will need to follow the rules I send home to find a "pet rock" by September the 15th. Remember those?  I will do a fun activity with them which will include decorating their rocks.  Please use this week to search for the ultimate rock.  Also, we need students to bring art supplies they would like to use to decorate their rock. We will be doing this next Monday the 15th.

Please continue to read with your child twenty minutes a night.  Make sure some reading is done aloud and help him/her summarize what is read. I am asking students to write at least two sentences.  Students who read, get to earn money for their checkbooks.

Also, we are in need of auction items for the end of the nine weeks. Please send in anything you might find.

Ms. Motzkus and I are so excited about this year. I would like to thank all of you for your generosity. We have plenty of supplies right now. It would be nice if all students had a pencil box to help keep up with their checkbooks and pencils. If you have an old one at home, please send it in as soon as possible.  We have tons of new curriculum underway, and we will be sending home reading logs and homework on Monday.

In Math, we will be learning about number sense and place value, estimation, rounding, and expanded notation.  Please look for completed work in the green communication folders. I will send home practice as needed. We will begin multiplication by about week 7, so it would be a great idea to start practicing multiplication tables.

In Reading, we are studying Traditional Literature. This is a really fun unit because we get to study fairy tales and fables. We will be working on making connections, story elements, and sequencing.

In Language Arts, we will be studying Response to Literature.  Students will be required to summarize, and write an opinion about the Literature they read.  We will focus on sentence structure and the types of sentences. You will receive practice in the homework packet. We will also focus on editing and revising. Spelling practice will be sent home as needed. Please review the priority words I sent home. Students will receive their spelling words on Monday.

In Social Studies, we will be learning about Greece and its influence on our country. We will begin our Science Unit on rocks and minerals after our unit on Greece.
