April

I hope everyone had a wonderful and safe break. Please remember that the CRCT is next week and we will be reviewing at school until then. I would like for everyone to continue to practice at home in order to ease anxiety. As always, students will need to have plenty of rest and a good breakfast on testing days. Snacking will not be allowed at our normal time, and students who do not eat before school will be hungry before we have a chance to snack. Also, make sure your child is on time during this week. Late arrivals will have to make up the test on another day.

We will continue this nine weeks with multi-digit multiplication and division. It is important to continue to practice multiplication in order to recall facts. Students who do not know their tables at this point are really going to struggle this nine weeks.

We are learning how to write persuasive essays this nine weeks, as well as, reviewing parts of speech and editing and revision practices. At the end of the year, I will put writing requested by fourth grade teachers in students' portfolios and send extra writing home.

Our study of Georgia was a huge success and I hope students told you about our edible maps.  We are studying magnets in science right now and have some fun experiments planned.  We also plan to start our earth/recycling unit this month and have many fun activities planned. In health, we will be studying nutrition and planning a food fair. Students will really have a good time with this unit.

As always, please let us know if you have questions or concerns.

I hope everyone is excited about our upcoming Living Museum. I know the students are ready to show all they have learned this nine weeks. Please continue to practice speeches at home and make sure you send your child in costume on the 10th. I sent home an information letter, but if for some reason you did not get one, please let me know.

This week we have a fabulous in-house field trip on heat. We will be learning all about heat during the next few weeks. We will also cover Magnets. Students usually find this unit to be a lot of fun. We also have a trip planned to the Chattahoochee Nature Center to learn more about habitats.

We will be practicing for the CRCT and Gillian Hicks has set up a parent rotation to help us. Please practice at home also.

Keep working on multiplication because part two will begin the last nine weeks. Students will need to know their facts to experience success with this unit.

Please do not forget Movie on the Mount this weekend. Backyard Burgers is giving Mtn. View families the best deal in town. Bring warm blankets and let's have a great time.

Also, our silent auction will be later this month. Please come and bid on a fun activity spent with a teacher.

February

I would like to thank everyone for a wonderful conference week. Ms. Edwards and I enjoyed getting to know everyone better. As we mentioned in conferences, we have much to cover before testing at the end of April. Students are going to be working very hard in each curriculum area, and our expectations will increase for independent work habits.

We are working on fractions, area, perimeter, and measurement this nine weeks.  Please continue to study multiplication and division so that we will be ready for the last nine weeks of math.

Our non-fiction writing is taking place during reading and writing workshop while we work on our biography unit. Parents received an overview of our Living Museum Project, and we are busy researching our famous people. Please remember that your child will need to dress like his/her character on March 6th. We will be sending home a reminder. PTA will be selling display boards in the school store very soon. We will let you know, as soon as we know, how much they will cost. School Box has ordered them, and PTA is helping everyone out by picking them up for the third grade. Please let them know how much we apprciate them.

Our class has created beautiful government trees. I hope everyone gets to see them while they are up on our hall wall. We are learning about the three branches of government in social studies, so please ask your child some questions. You may be surprised at how much he/she knows. Our next fun project will be landform booklets, and I will be sending home an optional project for students who would like to earn extra credit toward an O. We will also be studying magnets and heat this nine weeks.

Our room mom is going to be sending out emails asking for volunteers to help with our biography projects and CRCT practice, so watch for updates. Please remember to have your child read each night and complete the reading log. Also, make sure you check the agenda each night for important notes, assignments, and reminders.

Thanks,

Ms. Walworth and Ms. Edwards

January

We are so happy to be back in the swing of school. We want to thank everyone for all of the wonderful holiday gifts.  Mrs. Edwards and I really appreciate the time that you take to show your support of us and our classroom. We have so many fun activities planned for this nine weeks.

During math we will be learning fractions and measurement. Please continue to study multiplication and division because we will start part two of that unit the fourth nine weeks.

Guided reading and writing will focus on non-fiction this nine weeks. We will be working on a huge research biography project which will be done at school. Information on the project will be given out during conference week, so that you have a better idea of what is expected. We will also need volunteers to come in the classroom to help with this project during the month of February.

We will begin cursive writing this nine weeks and the students are very excited. Please ask your child to show you how to make  letters at night so that you can check them. The curriculum we use for this does not teach the letters in ABC order.

Students have been busy drawing the circulatory and respiratory systems in class, and you will see those in our hallway. We will also be studying government, heat, and magnets this nine weeks.

Please continue to check and sign agendas and reading logs. We appreciate all you do.

December

We are having such a great time in our class this year, and I would like to thank all of the parents who have helped make this possible. I hope everyone is having fun preparing for the holidays, but please don't forget to read, read, read. I am still rewarding dollars for checkbooks that can be used at the auction. I believe that we have plenty of items to have another auction so I do not think I will need to ask for donations.  I plan to have the auction before the holidays since the grading period ends on the 21st.

In math, we are going to continue to master our multiplication facts, practice division, and cover geometry standards in the next couple of weeks. Our post test for math is tentatively set for the 19th.

In writing, we are working on responding to traditional literature which includes fairy tales and folk tales. We have been writing summaries, making connections, and giving recommendations. Our writing assessment will be next week and I will look forward to sharing this with you during conference week.

We are finishing up our soil unit and are looking forward to learning about the respiratory and circulatory systems.  We have some fun activities planned for the students. We also plan to start our Georgia habitat unit before the holidays.

If we do not get to see you before the holidays, please have a wonderful time with family and friends. We hope you all have a great break.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Walworth and Mrs. Edwards

November

November is here, and we are off and running with multiplication. I trust you have all received the notes and study information I sent home, and you are practicing facts. We are spending an hour or more each day working on strategies and practicing facts. Please continue to practice at home, and let us know if you experience any problems. We will soon start a great incentive program for students to master facts so practice, practice, practice.

We will be studying Cobb County history this week which is one of my favorite topics. Our trip to the Root House and the museum offers students a wonderful glimpse of the past. We will be creating a time line this week to show the progression of events in Cobb's history.

Next week, we will start our facinating study of soil.  We have many exciting activities planned and students will love playing the scientist as they identify different types. After our soil unit, we will be studying the human respiratory and circulatory systems, and we have many fun hands-on activities planned for this unit also.

As we prepare for Thanksgiving, we will be writing a delightful story about Terrance the Turkey and his Terrible day. Students love this activity.  We will also be working on responding to traditional literature which includes fairy and folk tales so if your child comes home telling about the three pigs, do not be alarmed. This unit of study will be on their level, as they learn to respond to literature by summarizing, making different types of connections, and recommending books to others.

Please continue to work hard at home. We appreciate all that you do.
