Enjoy Your Summer!!!

Dear Parents,

Our year has ended and I sincerely hope everyone has a wonderful summer.  The class gave me a lovely cologne and body lotion set and I thank everyone for your thoughtfulness.  If you returned your stamped envelope, you should receive your child's report card, SRI and STAR scores, and AR points soon.  The children should continue reading daily and practicing those math facts!!!

I hope to see everyone next school year.  You are more than welcome to stop by during Meet and Greet in August and let me know how you spent your summer. :)-----Happy Summer,  Joan Tinley

January News

Good Morning Parents,

I hope everyone has had a chance to look over the extra credit packet the children received on Paul Revere.  Paul Revere is one of the "Historic Heroes" the children will be studying as part of the new Georgia performance standards in the social studies curriculum.    http://picasso.cobbk12.org/index.php? module=curriculum&type=courses&func=display&CourseID=587  This extra credit project will offer a social studies and reading grade for the children. The children can present their project next week any day.  The children will receive a copied version of the original book for all the heroes the children will be studying this year---(We don't have a class set, so I decided to run off copies for everyone.) It would be a good idea to keep each book toreview before the CRCT.

I am looking forward to talking with everyone at conference time.  Please have questions ready--25 minutes goes by very quickly.  At your child's conference you will receive their 2nd nine weeks report card, SRI scores, AR points, and STAR scores..  I will also be glad to go over ITBS scores.  If some reason you need to cancel or reschedule your conference, please let the office know and they will inform me or e-mail me as soon as possible.

Please continue to work on independent thinking and problem solving at home.  If children are given a few extra moments to think through a situation or problem, they can usually solve it themselves.  This will give them the confidence they need to feel successful withtheir own judgements and choices.

It is midyear and we have depleted our supply of sharpened pencils, erasers, and glue sticks.  Any donations would be greatly appreciated.

Have a wonderful three day weekend!

Jumpstart in January

Happy New Year to everyone!!! We are starting our 3rd nine weeks with new units and expectations.  The children will be starting a unit on fractions and decimals.  Later on in the quarter measurement will be added.  I have added new math sites on www.ikeepbookmarks.com that reinforce fraction skills and are fun and engaging. Our field trip to Fernbank on the 9th will motivate the students to learn about Georgia regions and habitat standards.  Don't be surprised if your child comes home with some new "debating" skills.  Our writing focus will be on persuasive writing.  Students will learn to express an opinion and state reasons in hopes of persuading their audience.  The children will continue reading nightly and writing in their logs.  Hopefully this practice has turned into a habit---maybe?--:)

Parents, don't forget to check out the January calendar for test dates and events.  Conferences letters will go home this week, so check communication folders as well.

Thanks for all your support.  I can be reached by phone or e-mail at Joan.Tinley@cobbk12.org if you have questions or concerns.  Take care!!
