I can hardly believe that we are already completing our first month of school! It has been amazing! I adore each and every one of your children; they are all so full of life and excited about learning! Thank you all for your wonderful classroom donations!! I am so thankful and they will be very useful in our classroom this year. Also, a HUGE thank you to, Teresa MacCartney, for volunteering to be our room representative this year. Again, please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions!
Your child should be reading 20 minutes EVERY night! This is SO important! In addition, one math page will come home MOST nights. As you have noticed, a math page will not come home every night. When a math page does NOT come home, please have your child do IXL or practice math facts for 10 minutes. I have been so impressed with how consistent the children have been about completing and returning their math pages! Thank you for your diligence with this at home. :)
Math – We will begin focusing on basic addition and subtraction strategies. Some of the strategies will be review from first grade. Basic math fact skills are so crucial! This will be a big focus for us throughout the year. The 4th nine weeks the students will be assessed on addition math facts 1 – 9, so it is important that we begin working on it now. It is also a great skill to practice at home. The students should be able to recite answers to these fluently. (Example – 2+3, 7+4) Also, if they do not know their math facts it will make 2 and 3 digit addition and subtraction much more challenging.
Reading – We are continuing to get into our Daily 5 routine. So far the students have mastered Read to Self, Work on Writing, and Read to Someone. Tuesday we will begin Word Work and then the following week I will introduce Listen to Reading. The students are LOVING Daily 5 and are doing a great job with it. We are also working on our CAFÉ strategies. So far we have discussed Check for Understanding, Back Up and Reread, and Crossing Checking. There are many more to come!
Writing – We are working on Small Moment Stories. I am sure you have all seen your child’s “small moment notebook”! :) It has been fun to see them so excited about writing and collecting ideas for writing in their “small moment notebook”. We discussed how real writers are constantly coming up with ideas to write stories throughout the day and I encouraged each of the students to do the same.
Social Studies – We are wrapping up our unit on the Georgia Regions. This has been a fun unit! Friday the students will be assessed on locating the regions and giving two facts about each region. I will send home resources to study with Wednesday. The following week we will begin learning about the Creek and Cherokee Indians.
Science Lab – The students are learning about solids, liquids, and gas in science lab this month.
