We are well on our way in first grade! I am SO PROUD of ALL of my students! We have started our Daily Five routine and the students have been doing a FANTASTIC job! They are up to 19 minutes of reading stamina with "Reading to Self" during their independent reading time! Way to go First Graders! They have also been working on building their stamina with other components! We are all now experts at choosing a “just right book”. We talked a lot about using I PICK to choose books. Remember: I-I (Choose a book.) P-Purpose (Why do I want to read it?) I-Interest (Does it interest me?) C-Comprehend (Am I understanding what I am reading?) K-Know (I know most of the words). Your child has also learned to use the “5 finger test” if they are choosing a new book to read. We've been learning so much and really getting used to the daily routines!
Here’s a look at what we'll working on this month:
Language Arts: continued work with short vowel word families, consonant blends with s, t, l and r, proper nouns, verbs, adjectives, story elements - beginning, middle, and end and identifying the characters and setting of a story. We will be working on making predictions with stories as well as retelling them. We will be working on our SCHEMA and making connections with stories!
Math: addition and subtraction - understanding the difference between the two, how they relate, place value (tens and ones), creating graphs as well as analyzing them.
Science: weather - types and seasonal changes, weather instruments and the different states of water
Social Studies: the life and contributions of Benjamin Franklin
