Spring is here! I hope that everyone enjoyed Spring Break! I cannot believe how fast this year is going by! I am SO PROUD of each of my students! They continue to put forth their best effort in everything that they attempt! It has been so much fun watching each student grow academically, and I am looking forward to a fun and exciting rest of the year!
Here’s a look at what we will be learning this month…
Reading/Language Arts-We will focus on understanding what we read by making connections and using a new comprehension strategy, synthesis! Synthesis is a the fancy term for summarizing and connecting the dots AS YOU READ. Debbie Miller author of Reading with Meaning describes the process of synthesis as ripples in a pond. As a reader continues through the book, taking in picture clues and context clues, adding that to his/her schema and inferences, connections are made and the story's message & characters' purposes become evident. This process is gradual and builds as the story unfolds. As thoughtful readers, we'll learn how to actually keep track of, monitor, and record this incredible comprehension strategy, so we are really digging deeper in our stories. We will also be conducting a few author studies to practice our response to literature. Some of the authors we will stud are Eric Carle, Kevin Henkes, Mem Fox, and Cynthia Rylant!
Writing-We will be learning how to write to persuade. We are focusing on stating our opinion and at least 3 good supporting statements or reasons for our opinion.
Math- We will study standard and non-standard measurements of weight and capacity. We will be using some very exciting tools including rulers, balances, thermometers, and measuring cups. We will also be practicing double digit addition and subtraction without regrouping. We will also continue to work on counting money, telling time, and a general review of all of the things we have learned this year!
Science-We will begin a unit on animals. We will study the different types of animals. We will even be doing our very own research project on an animal of our choice!
Social Studies-We've will be exploring and getting to know our American Folk Heroes. We will get to know John Henry, Johnny Appleseed, and Davy Crockett.
