February is here and we are learning, learning, learning! I am super impressed with our resident “Nouns, Verbs, and Adjectives Experts”! We have also really taken the plunge with our addition and subtraction facts. I am so proud of how quickly we are moving along! I can tell a huge difference in the speed at which they can add those facts! This week we are really focusing on subtraction, which is a little bit more difficult but we are still giving it our best effort!
This month, we will be working on…
Language Arts: informational writing, homophones, compound words, contractions, root words, prefixes and suffixes, vowel diagraphs and diphthongs, (oi, oy, oo, au, aw) and "bossy r" (r-controlled vowels ar, or, ir, er, ur), We will also continue to learn about homophones and homonyms as well as contractions, root words, prefixes, and begin to focus on dictionary skills.
Math: money - counting coin and bill combinations to $1, making fair trades and comparing amounts using <, >, and = and telling time to the half and quarter hour, quick recognition of addition and subtraction facts
Social Studies: the life and contributions of George Washington Carver
Science: plants

Reminders
Congratulations to Joshua, our latest Character Ed Student!
Several of our friends are coming to school without coats. On the days that we can, even though it is cold, we will go outside for a few minutes. Please be sure that your child has the proper outerwear for days like these.
I will be sending home a class list for Valentine’s Day. It is your decision whether or not your child exchanges Valentines. Please make sure that if they choose to exchange them, they include everyone in the class and fill the Valentines out at home. We will decorate our Valentine Bags at school, so don’t worry about making one at home!
If your child brings money to school, it needs to be in a marked envelope. Please make sure that you write on the envelope what the money is for along with your child's name.
We are continuing to work on addition and subtraction facts. One of our biggest goals is for your child to use the strategies they have learned and become fluent (very quick) with these facts. I emailed several websites, but just in case here are a few more…
