April's here and with it comes bees, flowers, birds and the CRCT test!!! :)  Please PLEASE be sure that you are taking the practice tests online as the CRCT is rapidly approaching.  The dates will be April 23-25 and the makeup days will be the following Monday and Tuesday.  We're working so hard in here and we really appreciate all the work you've been doing at home. :)

Here's what else we'll be working on this month:

Language Arts: compound sentences, root words, reviewing our reading comprehension skills and practicing our spelling rules that we've learned this year.

Math: 3 digit addition, (8+1+2) measurement with nonstandard units and review, review, review!!!!

Science: animals (their basic needs, classifying them, body coverings, how they move and where they live)

Important dates:

April 7-11: SPRING BREAK!! :)

April 23-25: CRCT!!!

Reminder

Movie on the Mount was changed to March 29th at 5:30.

The silent auction is March 27th!  Come and bid on a chance to "Party like a Rockstar" with Mrs. Spooner and Mrs. Farah!  Also, First Grade is gathering items for a cooking themed basket!

What are we working on this month?

Language Arts: proper nouns and abbreviations, using commas in a series, -ing and -ed endings to words, correctly identifying the naming and action parts of a sentence, writing informational paragraphs, reading comprehension skills, dictionary skills and becoming more fluent readers!

Math: continuing our work with money (counting collections of quarters, dimes, nickels and pennies) and 2-digit addition and subtraction (without regrouping)

Science: plants (their basic needs and parts)

Social Studies: maps

Here's what we will be working on in January:

Language Arts: comparison and contrast of stories and characters in a story, reviewing main idea, long vowels with magic e, plural nouns, compound words, reviewing syllables in larger words and reading with more expression in our voices.

Math: fractions, (1/2 and 1/4) telling time to the hour and half hour, identifying and counting collections of coins and working on our math facts to 18.

Social Studies: Martin Luther King, Jr. and maps and globes

Science: lights and shadows and parts of plants

*January 22-28: Conferences- each day will be an early release day.

*As your child has probably told you, our specials schedule has changed!  We now have a full-time computer lab teacher that students will visit every week and a half or so to learn keyboarding and word processing skills.  We are super excited!

Thanks for all of your help with our holiday celebration.  A big thanks to Jami West for organizing our celebration and getting everything together!  The kids had a great time!

December

This month, we will be working on : Holiday and Family Traditions, Patriotic Symbols, Canada, Magnets, Graphing, Number Sense, Place Value, Shapes, Addition and Subtraction Facts--we are expecting quick recall of facts to 12, Position Words, Blends, Digraphs, Word Endings, Synonyms, Homonyms, Antonyms, Nouns, Verbs, Adjectives. We will be writing more and more--5 sentences is the minimum when we write stories. In Reading, we will continue with our guided reading groups with a big focus on fluency--reading like we speak.

December 14th- We will be creating gingerbread houses! Please come join us!

December 17th- Canada Rotation- we will be visiting other first grade classrooms to learn many new things about Canada.

In our classroom, we will continue working hard on writing descriptive paragraphs, fact families, place value, shapes, patriotic symbols, long ago and today, nutrition, addition facts, subtraction facts, and reading, reading, reading!

Fall is here!

October is a busy month!  We will be working on:

Language Arts: digraphs, beginning blends, main idea, cause and effect, homonyms, contractions, ABC order, and really improving our writing.  (Paragraphs, consistent use of capital letters and periods)

Math - basic 2-d and 3-d shapes, describing objects in space by proximity, position and direction, (near, far, above, below, etc.) continuing our addition and subtraction facts, identifying numbers as groups of tens and ones

Science: Weather and water

Social Studies:  We just finished producers and consumers.  We will be starting on maps and globes soon!

This week your child brought home his or her yellow sight word folder.  Please keep these folders at home and work on the words with your child.  I will be asking you to send them back in later in the nine weeks.

In September we will continue to study germs.  We will also start our unit on producers and consumers.  In math, we are working on number patterns, addition and subtraction facts to 10, even and odd numbers, and place value.  Also, we are really working on increasing our math vocabulary...we will be learning about addends and sums.  We are really focusing on becoming great writers and doing what great writers do.  Ask your child what great writers do!  They should be able to tell you some of the things that we are working on! (Use capital letters, correct punctuation, include details, the story makes sense, etc.)
