What went well...

As we make it through the arduous C.R.C.T., I feel the need to know that SOME things were fun, exciting, interesting, and worth doing again next year.  For those who are "Repeating Parents" - this being your second time having me as your child's teacher - what events/activities were you looking forward to doing this year?  What did your older child do that you wish we would have done this year?

As the year comes to an end, I like to get a good idea of what we need to keep, what we need to change, and what we need to remove from our third grade activities.

For many of you, a younger child is fast approaching 3rd grade, and we want to make each year the best experience it can be.  With your input, I can tweak things to keep the good, improve the okay, and remove the bad for future classes.

I appreciate your time and efforts throughout the year.  Thank you!!

Mr. Simpson

Print out the worksheets, watch the videos, follow the PowerPoint, and MASTER long division.  :)

Also, the Interview is an exercise in using correct dialogue in narrative writing.

Area - My Office

Area – Performance Task

Understand the meaning of a square unit

Model by tiling the area of squares and rectangles using square units (square unit, square inch, square foot, etc.)

Determine the area of squares and rectangles by counting, addition, and multiplication with models

Explain the relationship represented by a formula (area)

Students took the standards and constructed an office using the square tiles to plan a 9 by 12 office.  They measured, cut out, and labeled furniture models to be used to filled their office.  To duplicate (or practice) this skill at home, try this: Download Area andperimeter - office - performance task

I.T.B.S. - What does it all mean to me?

This is a good website/powerpoint to walk you through some of the basics of the ITBS scores.

http://curriculum.risd41.org/documents/itbs_analysis/ITBS_info.ppt

Any score under 75 is an area to work upon.  Any score over 90 is a strength to rely upon.  If you happen across a score less than 50, be concerned.  We may need to setup a conference to discuss any scores you wish explained.

The bottom of the ITBS page has bars that either go to the left or to the rightTo the left is negative, doing less than the national averageTo the right is positive, doing more than the national average.

Remember, Due to the county upgrades, I will be unable to access my email to answer any questions over the holiday but PLEASE write down those questions and I will try my best to explain the data to you.

Parent Survey for Standards-Based Report Cards

Parent Survey for Standards-Based Report Cards

The Cobb County School District encourages parents to participate in the online fall survey for the new standards-based report cards.  As part of the ongoing development process, a survey link has been posted to the Cobb District website to gather input on the recently distributed K, 1, and 2 report cards.  Please visit www.cobbk12.org/generalinfo/survey.htm to respond. The survey will be open until Dec. 1, 2008.

Recipes for Disaster...

The "fall chill" in the air, combined with an added workload and the microbial "gunk" floating around, creates a recipe for disaster.  The need for students to stay HEALTHY is becoming increasingly difficult as much as it is becoming increasingly IMPORTANT.  This time of year is packed full of learning and missing even a day can back up the workload and make things go from bad to worse.  To add to that, daylight savings has kicked in and we are even more likely to have sleep issues.

A lack of good sleep is a recipe for disaster on so many levels. In an article from News-Medical.net, children are not only at risk for poor focus, decreased retention, a lack of performing task, but also increased behavior problems.  Here are just a few articles on SLEEP that I found on the internet to back-up the articles I read in Parent, Parenting, Psychology Today, and other magazines.  Take a look at the research... sleep does a body good.

Pacing...

I feel compelled to give you a "heads-up" as to how much material and how fast the material you should expect in the upcoming weeks.

LANGUAGE ARTS:

Listening/Speaking: Students are going to be expected to listen more carefully, speak more fluently, and develop better "Listening/Speaking" ability in preparation for their Informational Reports.

Reading: Expect a larger number of skill-based work to be coming home.  We are driving deeper into Informational Text Features are we look at the differences (and skills) necessary to read non-fiction.

Writing: We are working towards more "report-like" writings with less coming from the writer’s interpretation and MUCH more from facts they have found.

English/Grammar: We are finishing Verbs and students will need to be able to switch easily between past/present/future tenses and spell those verbs correctly.

MATH:

Multiplication is no longer the focus as we move to answering, "What is the relationship between multiplication and division" through problem solving and algebra.  Oh, and yes, that is right - ALGEBRA.  Finding the variable will become our focus after this week. - The last week in November and the first week in December will be devoted to Geometry so we will need to finish multiplication AND division (and algebra) before then.  :)

Science will jump off where we left off by "digging deeper" into fossils and remains of past plants and animals.  SHORT unit packed into two weeks.

Social Studies: Government is wrapping up with a quiz Wednesday on the three branches of government then the final test on Friday over everything from the three levels to the three branches and everything in-between.  Know your 3 branches for all three levels.

Health: Body systems.  We will begin our discussions of the physical body with the heart and circulatory system.

If you're starting for feel your palms sweat and cold chills, then you've got the point that it isn't going to be a cakewalk - that was Fall Festival.  Yep, it is time to get serious.

Language Arts - All 4 parts

Our Spelling lesson turned into a speech lesson as the /s/ sound was a topic that led us to practicing saying the /s/ sound in various words.  That led us to THIS website (hosted by the University of Iowa) where each sound is shown through interactive animation of the structures inside our mouths.  Very cool.Phonicsheader

ByTheWay, it says Phonetics but is spelled phonetically, hence the confusion.
