OCTOBER

NEWS FOR OCTOBER

  • Word Ladders - These will occasionally be in the homework packet.  The students will not be able to complete them alone.  They asked for them to be in the packet because they thought it would be fun to work the puzzle with a parent.  The next one will have a "word bank" attached and should make it easier.
  • Reading Comprehension - We are starting a new "project."  Each Wednesday your child will bring home an activity that must be completed with an adult.  Please read the letter that accompanies each activity.  I am so excited about trying this.  I can't wait to see the positive results that the children will gain from this.
  • October 3rd, Friday -Movie on the Mount night!!!
  • October 8th, Wednesday - Funk Heritage Museum field trip day!!!
  • October 15th, Wednesday - Early Release
  • October 17th, Friday - Report Cards Go Homet Today!!!!
  • Science - Essential Question:  What is matter?  How does matter change?
  • Social Studies - Essential Question:  How is the life of the Cherokee and Creeks similar and different from our life today?
  • Writing - Essential Question:  How can I describe events through a narrative writing?
  • Math - Essential Question:  What strategies can I use to solve two-digit addition and subtraction?  How can I make change using coins?
  • Parents - Thank you so much for all you do for our kids and our classroom.  You are awesome resources to have!  I can't wait for the mystery readers to come to our room.  Please feel free to "dress" for the part or add anything to your reading that you need to.
  • Wish List - Thanks for the colored paper and plastic notebook sleeves.  This month our classroom could use post-it notes and extra snacks.  We play different games using the post-it notes and we go through them quickly.

Enjoy this beautiful Fall weather!  This month is so busy and we are learning so much!   Your children are doing a great job with self-control and seem really eager to grow and learn new things.  We have a saying that we say almost everyday, "TODAY IS A GREAT DAY TO LEARN SOMETHING NEW!"  So, when you ask them what they learned today, they shouldn't say "Nothing" or "I don't know."  They should know something new!!

September

Thank you so much for a great Curriculum Night.  I appreciate all your support and I am looking forward to a great year.

September Book Report information will come home on September the 8th.  They will be due on September 30th.  Have fun and let your child use their imagination.  Remember to practice their presentation at home.  It is important that they are confident when they present their book to the class.

In Math we are working on organizing and displaying data on bar graphs, picture graphs, Venn Diagram and Tally Tables.  For this month, please practice, practice, practice addition facts.

Picture Day is September 10th.  They should wear their best smiles!

I am reading How to Eat Fried Worms aloud to the students.  They are really enjoying the book and are looking forward to watching the movie as a special reward after we finish the book.  Also, everyone should be reading chapter book at this point.  If you need suggestions for your child, please let me know.  I would love to get them hooked on books they enjoy.

Have a great September and email me with any questions.  Thanks!

August 2008

This first week has shown that we are going to have an awesome year.  We have jumped into so many new things.  Please practice addition and subtraction facts to 18. It is essential that they can recall facts rapidly.  This first nine weeks in math we will be focusing on graphs, money, addition facts and comparing numbers up to 3-digits.  Try practicing addition facts while driving in your car and allowing your child to use real coins while your out and about.

In Social Studies, we will be learning about Georgia and maps.

In Reading we will be doing individual assessments of each student, as well as, working on writing poetry and writing a paragraph with at least 5 sentences.  We will also be writing our first friendly letter that you will get to respond to every Friday.

In Spelling we are working on short and long vowel sounds, apostrophes, compound words and learning how to spell our "No Excuse" words.

We are working on a class list for each of you and I look forward to seeing you at Curriculum Night.
