Summer Fun.....

Hey Mountain View Families,

We just want to thank each and every parent that volunteered for our Field Days! You guys were TROOPERS on Wednesday to endure the cooler temperatures and the rain! WOW....are we lucky or what to have such wonderful parents? Friday was perfect! The weather was so great and the kids had a wonderful time! Thank you so much!

We just wanted to encourage you all to exercise and MOVE with your children over the summer! There is no better way to get to know them than taking a walk with them or hiking down a trail or going for a bike ride through the neighborhood! The lines of communication are wide open here!

How about putting on a friendly competition with your children for fitness? Maybe eating healthier meals, drinking more water instead of soft drinks, and turning off the television will be the first steps to  being a healthy family!

We have enjoyed teaching your child this year more than you can ever imagine. Thank you for all of your support and kind words this year. We just "have a ball" in class! Remember......

................DON'T JUST SIT...........GET FIT!!!!!

National Physical Fitness and Sports Month

May is National Physical Fitness and Sports Month

The Cobb County School District encourages all of its students and their families to get outside and play as we celebrate National Physical Fitness and Sports Month throughout May! Backed by the National Association for Sport and Physical Education, this initiative is about helping students combat obesity and inactivity through sports and physical fitness.

The NASPE recommends that schools and families incorporate at least one hour of moderate physical activity into every child's daily routine. The theme for the month is "Be Active Your Way," focusing on helping kids find a sport or activity that they enjoy that doesn't require a coach or instructor.

Throughout May and entering the summer break, Cobb County Schools will promote wellness and physical activity in and outside of the classroom. Parents can find ways to encourage their children to be active on the NASPE Web site.

FITNESSGRAM

Here is the link for the standards for the FITNESSGRAM test!  Look for the boy/girl chart, then find your child's age! It's that simple. We do the pushups, trunk lift, curlups, sit and reach, and the PACER with our students!

March Into Fitness

Hi Mountainview Families,

We want to invite you to attend the Family Fitness Night this Friday, March 6th from 6-8:00.  We will be discussing lots of fitness, safety, and wellness ideas for your family. We will explain the FitnessGram Physical Fitness test we are conducting this year for our 3-5th grade students as well.

In our PE classes, we will be making the new schedule switch again on Friday, March 6th.  We know this has been so very confusing for you to plan for your child, but imagine trying to plan for 800 students! We have made it work and hope you guys have managed to make a calendar for wearing the proper clothing and shoes for our class ~ thank you!

We are finishing up our Jump Rope unit with all grade levels and are working on Fitness now to prepare for the FitnessGram coming up before Spring Break!  After the break, we will introduce our Volleyball unit with the upper grades and throwing and catching with the primary.

We just love teaching your children and can't imagine doing anything else. Please encourage your family to get out and exercise together and if there is anything we can do to help you out, please feel free to contact us.

PLAY AWAY!!!

Report Card Survey

Parent Survey for Standards-Based Report Cards
The Cobb County School District encourages parents to participate in the online fall survey for the new standards-based report cards.  As part of the ongoing development process, a survey link has been posted to the Cobb District website to gather input on the recently distributed K, 1, and 2 report cards.  Please visit www.cobbk12.org to respond.  The survey will be open until Dec. 1, 2008.

November

Hi Students and Parents!!!!
We hope that you and your family are enjoying the beautiful Fall colors and taking those priceless walks as a family. Not only will this time together give you a good cardio workout, but you will have the best conversations with your children. It is a Win-Win for everyone!
We have completed our Lacrosse unit and moved into our basketball unit. The younger students are working on ball handling skills while the upper students are working on dribbling, shooting, and the rules of the game.
Mrs. Janas and Coach Devore attended the State convention for the Georgia Association for Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (GAPHERD) in Savannah the beginning of the month. We learned many new activities to bring back to the students at Mtn. View. We tried out some tag games that we have all enjoyed. See if you can challenge them to "finger tag" or "Off the Line" tag. We plan on continuing the basketball unit until the Thanksgiving Holidays.
Check out the following link:   http://www.tutorials.com/07/0732/0732.asp    You can learn to keep score when you take the family bowling and perhaps pick up a few tips along the way.  In case we don't see you, have a wonderful and Happy Thanksgiving with your family and remember how grateful we are for the opportunity to teach your child!                                      Mrs. Janas & Coach Devore

October 2008

Thanks to the generosity of Trojan Youth Lacrosse, Mountain View has enjoyed a new unit that the students have LOVED!!! The TYL Club donated 70 sticks and balls to our school. We have learned about the game and had a great time mastering the skills of catching, passing, cradling, scooping and learning how to work as a team. The K-2 used scoops (shorter handles) while the 3-5 grades used the lacrosse sticks (longer implements). We look forward to building on these skills next year!

We hope to see everyone at Movie On the Mount to see "Alvin and the Chipmunks" to raise money for Relay for Life. What a wonderful way to support a worthwhile cause and have some family time as well.

October 8th is WALK TO SCHOOL DAY. Coach Devore and Mrs. Janas will meet you at either Northhampton Subdivision or the Aquatic Center to walk the groups over to school. Thank you to the West Family for organizing this for our school every year!

The next unit we will cover will include Frisbee games and Team Handball to help us with catching and throwing skills. We hope you will get out in your yards and "PLAY" with your children. Remember what we always say....

                              DON'T JUST SIT....GET FIT!

Our last activity of the month will include our Halloween stations that the students look forward to every year. We feature our climbing rope (Jack in the pumpkin patch), target throwing (pumpkin toss), the most popular "Bat cave" featuring scooters and strobe lights, and many other fun activities!!!! Thank you for all of your kind words and support of our program. You guys send us the BEST kids in the world !!! It is truly a pleasure to teach at Mountain View!

September, 2008

Hi Mountain View Community,

We have completed our Fitnessgram Physical Fitness test and have moved into the LACROSSE unit for our 3-5 grade students! They LOVED learning how to cradle and scoop the ball up. We will move into throwing and catching next week while incorporating some game-type situations! We want to thank Trojan Youth Lacrosse  for donating all of our equipment to us! We have 70 brand new sticks and balls for this unit, all due to the generous donation from this wonderful program! Thanks Guys!

Our Kindergarten - 2nd grade students are working on space/levels/ pathways/ speeds while playing games! It is so much fun to watch them learn while they are working on fitness ~ they are working so hard and giggling the entire time! We have the best job in the world!

We are having a blast with the kids and they are such great students. We have the best kids in the world and they try so hard~ thank you for supporting our program the way you do!

Keep playing!!!!!!!!!!! Mrs. Janas and Coach Devore!

*Welcome Back!

Hi Everyone!!!

Welcome to Physical Education for the 2008-2009 school year! We know this is going to be a great year of learning and fun for your child! We are very excited about this year and expect great things to happen in our class.

We welcome Mr. Devore to Mtn. View this year. He is coming back to

Cobb

County

and is a wonderful addition to our school. He has 18 years of experience in the elementary and middle school grades. Be sure to stop by and meet him next time you are in the building!

We are going to be doing some new things in PE this year. The Lassiter Youth Lacrosse league has generously donated lacrosse sticks for us to use and we are looking forward to trying this out on our new field.

K-2 will be starting off the year working on locomotor skills while incorporating spatial awareness through activities and games! 3rd - 5th grades will begin the year with a brand new fitness test called Fitnessgram. This measurement is similar to Presidential Physical Fitness with minor changes. We will submit the results and our goal is to improve on these scores by next spring! This testing along with lacrosse will be a busy fall for our students.

Have you seen the playground area? It is WONDERFUL ~ sodded and more safe than it has ever been. Hopefully this will reduce the number of injuries out on the playground while giving us a beautiful field to play and run around in.

Thank you for being so wonderful to us here at Mtn. View. The parents of our children are supportive and very giving with your time and resources. We look forward to working with you to make this year the best your child has ever had!
