- I hope you all enjoyed a wonderful Winter Break! I am happy to announce that our class will have a student teacher from Kennesaw State University. Miss Jennifer Miller will be working in our classroom for most of the semester. Miss Miller will send home a letter telling you a little about herself sometime this week. I’m sure the kids will all welcome her to our class!
- We will have a quiz on unit 5 vocabulary this Thursday, Jan. 12th. Students will bring home their vocabulary journals and study guide sheets Tuesday, Jan. 10th.
- Please check your child’s folder tomorrow for new reading level stickers as well as log-in information for IXL Math and Skills Tutor. I am highly encouraging children to work through the fractions sections of IXL as we work through our new math unit. All students who worked on IXL over our break have earned a checkbook bonus!
Now that we are starting a new nine weeks, we will be learning so many new things in January. Some things that we will be learning are:
Math:
- January is dedicated to fractions! Yikes! Kids get so scared when they hear fractions, but I promise they are not nearly as hard as they expect! There are also so many fun activities we will do with fractions. We will learn about fractions of a group, fractions of a whole, and how to add and subtract fractions.
Language Arts:
- We will be working with non-fiction text in Reading this month. We will work on these skills:
- determining the author’s purpose
- identifying and using nonfiction features and structures
- Verbs! Verbs! Verbs! Our focus in grammar is verbs.
- Writing will work on procedural “How To” writing and beginning research skills.
- Handwriting: We are beginning cursive writing instruction and the students are very excited! Please give your child opportunities to practice reading your cursive handwriting. Once they can read it easily, it makes remembering the strokes that much easier. We also talked about slanting the paper, sitting tall with feet on floor, and holding paper with the hand they're not writing with. Most important of all, I'm asking all of them to try to hold their pencils correctly (with middle finger on bottom of pencil, not on top). Bad habits are difficult to change, and legibility can be achieved even if they hold pencil "incorrectly", but holding it correctly will enable them to write much faster in the long run. Using pencil grippers helps them with their grip. If you can send in a few for your child to use, that would be great. I will send home a copy of the cursive letter formation we use this week. We will be taking it slowly, so please don't encourage your child to attempt to write in cursive at this point; just being able to read cursive is a good starting point. I will send home their practice papers so that you can see which strokes and letters we've practiced in class.
Science:
- We will continue to study the 5 regions of Georgia (Mountains, Piedmont, Coastal Plain, Swamp, and Atlantic Coast). We will focus on the animals and plants that live in our regions and their adaptations.
Social Studies:
- Students will continue learning about famous Americans with Mrs. Hollar. This quarter they will cover Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt and Mary McLeod Bethune.
January dates to remember:
- Monday, Jan. 16th No School in observance of Dr. King holiday
