January News

Welcome back from a nice long break!  I hope everyone had a nice, restful holiday.

Important Dates:

Fri.  1/13 - report cards come home!  Please sign the signature card send it and the envelope back

Mo 1/16 - MLK Day - No School

Wed 2/1 - Homework Due

In math we are learning about fractions!!!  At the end of the lesson I will be ordering pizza for the class and making our own fractions and eating them!  We are also continuing work on graphing, money, and we will start to tell time to the hour.

In writing we are working on How to books that lead up to us practicing and researching for non-fiction writing!

In language arts we are working on suffixes, contractions, compound words, antonyms and synonyms

In science we will be learning about lights and shadows

In social studies we will be learning about Harriet Tubman

I can not believe that we are half way through with our year!!!  Please keep practicing on IXL!!!

We have the Media Center on Fridays this month

December News

Welcome to December!  I can not believe that we are here already!  This year is flying by.  The weather (although up and down) is changing ti very chilly weather.  Please send a coat for your child. 

In Language Arts we are working on narrative writing and adding details to stories.  We are also working on inferring, looking ahead and trying to determine what will happen in a story.

In math we are reviewing our facts of addition and subtraction.  We are also working on money, place value and representing numbers. 

Science is so muc fun with magnets!!!!  Play with magnets at home.

Social Studies - We are learning about Lewis and Clark and Sacagawea.

Important Dates:

December 16 - Bring in a book for the book swap!!

December 19 - If your child brought in a book, this is the day they get to pick a book~

December 21st - Our classroom winter celebration from 12:00-1:00!!!  All parents are welcome to come join the fun!!  We are making gingerbread houses!

December 22nd - Final day before the winter break.  it is PJ day!  Your child can wear pajamas and bring a furry friend!  We will also be watching the Polar Express.  If you have a DVD of this movie, may we please borrow it??  I will return it that day.  Thank you!

November News

Important November Dates:

Tuesday, November 8-Teacher workday, no school for students

November 21-25-Thanksgiving break, no school

I am so excited to be back! It was wonderful to see the students and hear all the exciting things they learned while I was away.

There are many things that we will be learning about in November and December.

We are going to continue to use the skills and prior knowledge in math to work on money, place value and addition and subtraction.

Reading/Language Arts - We are working on inferring. Using what we have read in a text and making preditions about what is going to happen next. We will continue our work with nouns, verbs, adjectives, antonyms, synonyms, etc...

Writing - We are going to continue to learn to compose, revise and publish our wrtings. We are also working on extending our sentences and compound sentences.

Social Studies - We are learning about Thomas Jefferson. We had such a great time with Ben! You can go to the PebbleGo website at home and learn more about Thomas with your kids! The website is http://cvl.cobbk12.org The username is cobb and the password is bird.

It's October Already?!

Hi 1st grade families,

   I have been enjoying my time here with the students and feel like my time with them is going to be ending way to fast! They have all been such joys to get to know.

   So October is going to be busy. Here are some important dates to remember.

* Oct. 4th: Walk to School Day

*Oct. 5th - 7th: CogAT testing. Very important to have students here on time in the mornings because we start promptly at 8:15 am.

*Oct. 14th: End of First Nine Weeks.

*Oct. 24th - 28th: Conference Week. Students will be dismissed 2 hours early each day.

***HOMEWORK WILL BE DUE OCT. 28TH, ***

Math: We will be working on place value, greater than/less than, tallies/graphing, shapes and money. October is an exciting time in math. The students will be learning a lot of new concepts and ideas. Something that would benefit your student greatly is to start working with them on money at home. Give them some to "play" with, talk to them about how much things cost at the grocery store, question them about fair trades (i.e. one two dimes and a nickel can be fair traded for a quarter.) As always, extra support at home is so important.

Social Studies: We are going to start talking about Ben Franklin! Mrs. O'Connor really enjoys Ben and we have a lot of great activities to do with the kiddos about him. It is easier than you think to make him become cool! :0)

Reading: Pick up a good book and snuggle with your students during this wonderful fall weather. reading every night is such a positive influence on their reading abilities and levels!

Spelling Words:

Oct. 3rd week: frog, grab, pretty, bring, drip

Oct. 10th week: blue, clap, flag, glad, play

Oct.17th week: rain, stay, game, tape, pail, clay

Oct. 24th week: seat, feet, bean, seed, team

September Snip-its!

Welcome to September!  Fall is around the corner and we are working hard in the classroom.  Our routine is pretty much set and we are ready to learn, learn, learn.

This month we are going to be learning about...

Language Arts - proper nouns, nouns, verbs, adjectives, complete sentences and incomplete sentences.  We are working on word families as well!!!  We have a spelling challenge every Friday.

Math - even and odd, addition and subtraction and place value!!  Flashcards are a great way to help your child with math facts.

Science - WEATHER!!!! 

Social Studies - Ben Franklin

Writing - writing a correct sentence with spaces, capitals, punctuation

A new Cobb County Policy - Students may not ride home with friends on the bus anymore.  Students must ride on their own bus and get off at the correct stop.

If you have not returned the Performing Arts Permission slip, please do so as soon as possible.

Welcome to School!!!

Welcome to First Grade!  It was so wonderful to meet all of you at Sneak-a-Peek.  I know this is going to be a wonderful year and I am so excited to watch the students grow and learn.  First grade is such a special time!

Please send in a snack each day.  The students will have the opportunity to eat their snack first thing in the morning, or right before we go to specials.  I let the students decide which time they want to eat.     

They may also bring in a water bottle to keep on their desk.  Please make sure if your child brings in a water bottle that the bottle is labelled with his/her name and it has a snap top or sports top.  This will cut down on accidental spills! 

Our lunch time is 10:45-11:15.  A detailed schedule of our day and our specials schedule is in the take home folder and we will review it at Curriculum Night.

Curriculum Night is on August 18 at 6:00-8:00pm.  At this time, we will go through our curriculum and the ins and outs of first grade.  

I will post a more detailed blog after we meet at Curriculum Night.  I look forward to a fantastic year with all of you!
