I hope everyone had a great three day weekend! I can't believe September is already here. The students are doing a great job adjusting to our classroom routines and are doing terrific with The Daily 5! We have practiced read to self and work on writing so far. This week we will practice reading with someone, and next week I will introduce the word work and listening components of The Daily 5.
THIS MONTH
Reading/Lanugage Arts-We will continue to practice the five components of The Daily 5. By the middle of September the students will be ready to tackle the Daily 5 independently, and I will begin guided reading groups. We will also focus on identifying story elements, retelling stories, making predictions, and making connections when we read. In Language Arts we will focus on parts of speech including nouns and proper nouns, verbs, and adjectives.
Phonics-We will wrap up our review of short vowels and move into long vowels with "magic e" or silent e on the end. We will also focus on beginning blends.
Writing-Each day we start our writing workshop time with a mini lesson, and then the students write in their writing workshop notebooks. The students have been working on their stamina and are writing more and more each day! We will focus on ending punctuation, spacing between words, capital letters, and begin a unit on writing personal narratives. We will discuss using bold beginnings and exciting endings in our writing.
Math-We will begin a unit next week on tallies and graphing, then we will continue with addition and subtraction strategies, and introduce place value to the hundreds place. We started our math stations today. Each day the students will spend time in partners at a different math station to review skills being taught in class. This will allow me to work with small guided math groups everyday!

A FEW NOTES
- We will be visiting the media center as a class every Tuesday during the month of September. Tuesday will be our regular media center day.
- Sight word clubs will be coming home with your child this week. There are 200 sight words that first grade students are expected to know by the end of the year. We have broken these down into four clubs with 50 words each: Club A, Club B, Club C, and Club D. Your child will be coming home with the list of sight words they need to practice. Once they have mastered all 50 words in a particular club, they will move on to the next list. We will be practicing their sight words in school, but please practice at home as well!
- When helping your child choose a book remember the acronym IPICK: I choose good fit books, Purpose, Interest, Comprehend, Know.
- Thank you all for getting the first month of homework turned in! Make sure to read with your child for atleast 20 minutes each night and sign and initial on the homework calendar. The homework calendar and notebook will be turned in at the end of the month.
Thank you all for your support! This is truly a fantastic group of students, and I enjoy watching them grow and learn everyday!
