I can hardly believe it is already February! I hope everyone was able to get out and enjoy the gorgeous weather we had over the weekend! Here is a look at what first grade has planned for February!
THIS MONTH
Reading/Language Arts-We will be focusing on vowel digraphs and dipthongs (oi, oy, au, aw) and begin to focus on r controlled vowels (ar, er, ir, ur) We will also continue to learn about homophones and homonyms as well as contractions, root words, prefixes, and begin to focus on dictionary skills.
Writing-We will continue our unit on informational writing and explore different resources we can use to find information. We will be writing All About books.
Math-We will be practicing our math facts to 18 and review strategies for addition and subtraction. Practicing flash cards each night is a great way to practice all of the addition and subtraction facts! The following website http://www.factmonster.com/math/flashcards.html also has some online flashcards your child can use to practice! We will also review money and practice counting coins, bills, and making fair trades, and we will begin a unit on telling time to the hour, half hour, and quarter hour.
Science- We will start a unit on plants and focus on the parts of a plant, the needs of a plant, and even grow some of our own plants!
Social Studies- We will study Theodore Roosevelt.
IMPORTANT DATES
Our class media center days for February are on the following dates: Wednesday February 2, Tuesday February 8, Tuesday February 15
Tuesday February 8-Mountain View Book Swap collection. The Mountain View Book Swap will allow the children to bring in 2 gently used books on this day to exchange for another gently used book. The excess books will be donated to the Mountain View AR Program and to a local in-need school. Students exchanging books will receive a ticket for one book to be redeemed the following day.
Thursday February 10- We have our second High Touch High Tech program for the year all about plants!
Friday February 11-Honoring our Heroes Essay Contest entries are due! Information will be sent home tomorrow, February 1, about this years essay contest. I encourage all of you to participate!
Monday February 14- Valentine's Day! A class list will be sent home this week for you to use if you wish to send in valentine cards to be passed out in class.
February 21-25: No school! Winter break!
