Dear Parents,

         With the end of the year fast approaching, there are many events we wanted you to be aware of.  May 6^th is our Boosterthon from 11:00-12:00. Thanks for supporting this special event. Library books need to be turned in and all AR tests taken by May 8^th.  The AR picnic will be during student lunch times on May 11^th. Field Day for 2^nd grade will be held on Wednesday, May 13^th.  May 15^th from 9:00-12:00 we will be having our Young Authors Day in the media center.  Thanks to all who volunteered to help with this activity.  On the 18^th , from 8:15-9:15 the students will be sharing their writing portfolios in the classrooms with their parents.  Invitations will be sent.  Finally, the end of the year party is scheduled for Thursday, May 21^st at 1:00.  The next few weeks will be a busy but fun time for the kids.  We are all looking forward to it.

Happy Spring! In April, we will be studying life cycles of plants and animals. The CRCT will begin on Tuesday, April 21st through Monday, April 27th. The building will be closed from 7:20 until testing is completed each day. The second grade will test for the first 3 days of the schedule. Please continue to take practice tests each week.

The following are the instructions to access the social studies and science textbooks we use on-line. If you have any questions, please feel free to e-mail us.

Social Studies:

1. Go to www.educplace.com/services.

2. The user name is cobbstudent2 and the password is password.

Science:

1.Go to www.thinkcentral.com

2. Under user login you must select Georgia, then Cobb County Schools, then Mountain View

3. User name is your child's individual student number that they use to login at school

4. The password is education.

5. Press login.

6. On the home page you will click the computer monitor that says Library.

7. Click on HSP Science Book/E book

8. Choose a chapter and then a lesson.

9. Look for the "play" button to get the audio version.

March

Welcome to March! Our Friends play will be Friday, March 6 at 8:30. We hope to see you there. We are wrapping up all of our units for the third nine weeks and will begin the fourth nine weeks March 12th. Report cards will go home the end of the following week.

A big thanks to all of our wonderful families who have taken Nitro home. He is enjoying all the wonderful treats and toys that everyone has given him. A special thank-you to the Goodwin's for his lovely new cage. If you would like to bring Nitro home, there are available slots. Please send in a note.

Also, our gratitude is extended to Mrs. Tisdale and Mrs. Trombetti who have taken the time to teach a lovely junior achievement unit to the children. This unit extended our government studies and provided the children with some great hands on activities about how a community functions.

We have decided to postpone the March timeline/biography book report unitl after the crct. We would ask that the children use this time at home to take online practice tests. Please take at least one test weekly to prepare them for the types of questions that they will see on the crct. Thank-you for your cooperation and assistance with this.

Please continue to practice math facts to 20 as fluency will be required in third grade.

Also, a reminder to send in a snack daily with your child. They really get hungry before lunch and we have no snack bank available.

We are so excited to see the children reading nightly. A huge thank-you to all of our families for supporting the reading log program.

The Star Lab in-house field trip was wonderful and we look forward to our spring field trip to the Chattahoochee Nature Center. Information will be coming home soon.

February

February is here! Please see our class list below for addressing Valentine cards. We will be exchanging on February 13 in class. Please send in a card and/or treat for all students on our list if you wish to participate in our class valentine exchange. We will have a special craft and a Valentine's Day book during centers on Friday, February 13th.

Our book report this month is a character walk  on Friday the 27th. Please choose a character from your book and have fun dressing up like that character for a book walk. The whole second grade will walk in the morning and then share their book orally with their classes. No written report is due this month.

Star lab is coming on the 24th! We are really excited to bring this special second grade learning experience back again. This in house field trip will compliment our unit on the stars, moon, and sun.

Please begin taking crct practice tests on-line through georgiaoas. We have assigned certain tests for the children to begin practicing.

January 2009

Welcome back and Happy New Year to all! This month is full of many events to mark on your calendars. First, we will be going to Fernbank Museum on January 15. Please wear spirit wear and don't forget to pack a lunch if you are not purchasing a sack lunch. Also, wear comfortable shoes and although we will be inside most of our visit, please be prepared for a brisk walk and waiting in line for tickets to be distributed. January 19th is a student holiday. January 26th-30th is conference week and school will dismiss at 12:20 everyday. During this week, our lunch time will be around 10:24. Also, the book report for January will be due on the 30th. We will have several visits from the fire department this month as well and will be able to participate in an interactive program regarding fire safety and prevention. There is  a new reading log in place which we will use for the remainder of the school year. We hope that this will begin to foster good reading and study habits.  The 100th day of school is rapidly approaching and we are planning some fun actiivties to celebrate all of our accomplishments . December

Well the days are flying by and this will be a short, but fun month. On December the 5th, the second grade will be going to see the Nutcracker. Please dress accordingly on that day. We will have lunch at a later time on Friday, so you may want to send an extra snack or eat a hearty breakfast. Our book report for this month will be due on December the 15th. We will be sending instructions home on Monday the 8th and this assignment will replace the homework packet for that week. We have sent home the information to log onto Georgia testing practice site and would encourage you to have your child take a  test or two over winter break. We will be finishing our geometry unit on shapes and will be moving onto time next week. Our science unit on energy will be completed this week as well. We continue to work on informational reading and writing. From all of us, have a wonderful holiday season and we look forward to all the learning that awaits in the new year.

November

Happy November!

This month will be full of fun activities. Our Thanksgiving lunch will be Thursday, November 13 at 11:51. Please join our class for this special lunch. Our November book report will be a book chat and will be due Friday, November 21st. A letter with details regarding this book report will be sent home at the end of this week. Also, Funke Heritage Museum is sending a presenter on November 6th to make up for the field trip we were unable to attend. On Friday, November 14th, there will be our first PTA Bingo night. Come and join the fun.

Our energy unit will begin November 12th with class rotations and experiments. We will be completing our unit on subtraction and begin geometry. Please continue to work on addition and subtraction facts to 20 nightly.

Remember the week of November 24th-28th is a holiday week. Happy Thanksgiving!

October

The month of October will be a busy and fun month for our class. Please remember our field trip to the Funke Heritage museum that is scheduled for Wednesday, October 8th. The new specials rotation will begin on October 13th. This is a 5 day rotation that will be the same every week. A copy of the schedule will be placed in the back of your child's red home folder. Early release will be on Wednesday the 15th of October and school will be dismissed at 12:20. Also, we have the Book Fair coming the week of October 20-24th. Our class will attend the fair on Wednesday, October 22 at 12:30. Please join us there or you may send in money in an envelope for your child to use at this time.

The book report for this month will be a story map and will be due on Thursday, October 30th. A letter with directions for this project will go home next week.Also, report cards will be sent home on October the 17th.

The second nine weeks will cover subtraction. Please begin reviewing and studying your subtraction facts as well as continuing to study your addtion facts to 20. It will be very important for your child's success with the third grade math curriculum to know these facts with automaticity.

We are looking forward to our unit on energy and motion and beginning mad scientist the second nine weeks!

September

September will be a fun and busy month in our classroom. Social Studies units will include: the five Georgia regions  and the introduction of the Creek and Cherokee Nations. We will be learning about matter in science and will begin our mad scientist rotation. Molly will continue to make her journey home with each of the students every week. The first book report will be due on Friday, September 26th. Information regarding this assignment will be sent home next week. We are in need of playground equipment such as balls, jump ropes, or hula hoops. Please consider donating items. Our first field trip will be held in October and we are planning to explore the Georgia exhibit at the Funk Heritage Museum. There are openings for volunteers who would like to come in on Friday between 9:30- 10:30 for literacy centers. Please e-mail myself or our room mom, Mrs. Tisdale if you would like to come in and assist.  The openings begin in October. We look forward to another productive and positive month of learning!

Welcome to second grade!

We are off to a good start.  We have begun our study of the life cycle of trees through the seasons.  This Friday the students will begin their letter home journals.  Look for the green folder with a letter from your child.  Please be sure to respond to your child and send the folder back by Friday of every week. We are in need of playground equipment. Any donations would be appreciated. Thanks to all families to the class already!

Homework will begin this Monday the 18^th and will be due on Friday. Additionally, please do not forgot to send in any dismissal changes in writing.We look forward to getting to know all the students and to a productive and fun year ahead.
