Hooray for May!!

How crazy is it that May is already here?  We've got a jam-packed month full of fun and exciting activities!!  Here are some dates to keep in mind:

May 5th: Mtn. View's 80th Birthday! 

May 6th: Field Trip to the zoo - please wear your class t-shirts!

May 9th: All books must be returned to the media center.  This is also the last day to earn AR points for the wall.

May 12th: Animal research projects due - I can't wait to see them!  Also, today is the AR picnic.

May 14th: K-2 Field Day!  Wear your class t-shirt.

May 20th: Class awards given out in our classroom...more details to follow...

May 22nd: End of the year celebration!

May 23rd: Last Day of School! :)

*Congrats to our final Character Ed student of the month - Matthew!  The word is "Accomplishment" and Matthew really has tried so hard this year to accomplish what he has.  Way to go, Matthew!!

*Happy Birthday to: Megan (9th)

A million thanks goes out to my wonderful volunteers this year - esp. my fantastic room moms Mo VanDeusen and Mandy Conn and our resident "Laminator" Ilene Adkins.  I really appreciate everything everyone has done for me this year.  It's been a crazy year for me - changing states, jobs, names. :)  I could not have asked for a better group of kids and parents than what I received here my first year at Mtn. View.  THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!!

Spring Has Sprung!

April's here and with it comes bees, flowers, birds and the CRCT test!!! :)  Please PLEASE be sure that you are taking the practice tests online as the CRCT is rapidly approaching.  The dates will be April 23-25 and the makeup days will be the following Monday and Tuesday.  We're working so hard in here and we really appreciate all the work you've been doing at home. :)

Here's what else we'll be working on this month:

Language Arts: compound sentences, root words, reviewing our reading comprehension skills and practicing our spelling rules that we've learned this year.

Math: 3 digit addition, (8+1+2) measurement with nonstandard units and review, review, review!!!!

Science: animals (their basic needs, classifying them, body coverings, how they move and where they live)

Important dates:

April 7-11: SPRING BREAK!! :)

April 23-25: CRCT!!!

April 25: Final Scholastic Book Order due!

April 30: Final Reading Log due!

Silent Auction!!!

Hi everyone!  The Student Council Silent Auction is just around the corner - Mrs. Clatterbaugh, Mrs. Cox and I are auctioning off an afternoon of fun for 4 lucky kids! (Yes, ice cream is involved! :) )  Mark your calendars and make sure you bid on us!!!! :)

Marvelous March!

Wow!  We've made it to March!  It's amazing how quickly this year is flying by.  I hope you're seeing the growth and progress your child is making in first grade - I am!

Here's a look at what we'll be talking about this month:

Language Arts: proper nouns and abbreviations, using commas in a series, -ing and -ed endings to words, correctly identifying the naming and action parts of a sentence, writing informational paragraphs, reading comprehension skills, dictionary skills and becoming more fluent readers!

Math: continuing our work with money (counting collections of quarters, dimes, nickels and pennies) and 2-digit addition and subtraction (without regrouping)

Science: plants (their basic needs and parts)

Social Studies: maps

Some dates to keep in mind:

March 4th - Early Release (last one of the year!)

March 8th - Movie on the Mount - 5:30-9pm

March 9th - Daylight Savings Time - Spring Forward!

March 14th - End of the 3rd nine weeks!

Fabulous February is here!

WOW!  Who can believe February is already here?  Here's what we'll be learning about in our room:

Language Arts: plurals, -ing and -ed endings, continued work on different types of nouns, identifying verbs and adjectives in sentences, long vowels, ("when two vowels go walking...") reading comprehension, writing informational paragraphs

Math: finishing up time to the hour and half hour and counting collections of coins

Science: light and shadows, plants

Social Studies: Presidents' Day - Abraham Lincoln and George Washington

*We had a great day on Feb. 1st - every person in our room scored 100% on that Friday's Spelling Challenge!  WOW!  I'm so proud of the kids - they've been working so hard.  Thanks parents for all you do to make your child successful in school. :)

Happy New Year!!

Welcome back!  I hope that you all had a wonderful holiday.  Now, it's time to get back to work! :)

Here's what we're doing this month:

Language Arts: comparison and contrast of stories and characters in a story, reviewing main idea, long vowels with magic e, plural nouns, compound words, reviewing syllables in larger words and reading with more expression in our voices (no robots here!)

Math: fractions, (1/2 and 1/4) telling time to the hour and half hour, identifying and counting collections of coins and working on our math facts to 18 (Please keep reviewing math facts for our Mad Math Minute!!!)

Social Studies: Martin Luther King, Jr. and maps and globes

Science: lights and shadows and parts of plants

Dates to remember:

*January 21: No School - MLK Day

*January 22-28: Conferences- each day will be an early release day.  Please look for information coming home soon in your child's folder regarding conferences.

*January 23- 100th Day of School!  More info to follow....

*As your child has probably told you, our specials schedule has changed!  We now have a full-time computer lab teacher that students will visit every week and a half or so to learn keyboarding and word processing skills.  We are super excited!

*Reading logs must be returned by the end of the month to receive a special lunch and a Pizza Hut coupon!

*Scholastic Book Orders must be in by Friday, Jan. 25th!

*Happy Birthday to Breesia (Jan. 12th) and Samuel (Jan. 30th)!

*Congratulations to our Character Ed Student of the Month: Samuel!  Great job, Samuel! :)

It's December already?!

Brrrr!  Welcome to December!  I'm sure that things at home are getting very exciting - they are in here as well!  Here's what's going on -

*What are we learning this month?

-Language Arts - soft sounds of g and c, homophones, contractions, setting of a story, character comparison and continuing our great writing!

-Math - place value, solid shapes, continued work on fact families and related facts.  Please make sure that you are reviewing your Math Facts for Friday's Mad Math Minute!

-Social Studies - Canada and patriotic symbols

-Science - magnets

*December 3rd - AR party!

*December 6th - Field Trip to the World of Coke

*December 14th - Gingerbread houses!  We will be making our very own houses that day - more information to come!!

*December 17th - Canada Day!  We will be partnering with other first grade classrooms to learn about our neighbor to the north! :)

*December 20th - Winter Celebration - more information to come!

*December 21st - Holiday Sing-A-Long for Mountain View students.  Wear your pajamas that day! :)

*Congrats to our Character Ed student of the Month - Shawl! 

*December Birthdays - Rosie (27th) and Shawl (29th)  Happy Birthday!  Also, a belated birthday wish to Hunter whose birthday was November 20th. :)

Welcome to November!!

What an exciting month!!  There's so much happening!!  Here's what we're learning:

Language Arts: continuing our beginning blends, antonyms, character comparisons, reviewing main idea and cause and effect, classifying and still working on being the best writers that we can be!!

Math: fact families, 2-D and 3-D shapes and proximity words

Social Studies: long ago and today and patriotic symbols

*Nov. 14th: First grade play at 9:30, then Thanksgiving lunch.  (our lunch is at 10:48)  Hope to see you there!

*Nov. 16th: Wear your favorite college team's colors - Go VA Tech Hokies!! :)

*Nov. 21st-23rd: No School!  Happy Thanksgiving!!

Welcome to October!!

This is my favorite time of year!  Here's what we're going to be working on this month:

Language Arts: diagraphs, beginning blends, main idea, cause and effect, homonyms, contractions, ABC order, and really improving our writing.  (Paragraphs, consistent use of capital letters and periods)

Math - basic 2-d and 3-d shapes, describing objects in space by proximity, postion and direction, (near, far, above, below, etc.) continuing our addition and subtraction facts, identifying numbers as groups of tens and ones

Social Studies - Christopher Columbus and maps and globes

Science - weather

* Congratulations to our Character Ed winner for this month - Megan!  She truly embodies what the word "Integrity" really means. :)

* Early Release Day is Oct. 17th!

* Picture day is Oct. 18th - smile pretty!

* The Fall Festival is Oct. 20th from 12pm-3pm!

* Scholastic Book Orders are due no later than Oct. 22nd.

* Keep studying those spelling words for Spelling Challenge and addition facts for Mad Math Minute!

* Remember - reading logs are due on the last school day of each month in order to earn a special lunch with yours truly. :)

September is here!

Welcome to September!  Thank you all for being so patient while I worked towards getting this blog account up!  Things are awesome here in first grade and we're learning so much! A couple of things for you to note:

1. Here's what we'll be doing this month:

Language Arts: continuing to go over our letter sounds, working on short vowel sounds, syllables, consanants and vowels, diagraphs, making word families, using punctuation, capital letters and "spacemen" in our sentences, complete sentences and becoming better writers

Math: skip counting, patterns, calendar math, (days of the week, months of the year) graphing, addition and subtraction facts to 10 and relating addition and subtraction facts

Science: weather

Social Studies: communties and maps and globes

2. Congratulations to J.J. - our August Character Ed winner!  He is such a respectful student - way to go J.J.!

3. Reminder - Scholastic book orders are due this Friday September 14th.

4. First grade t-shirt $$ is due if you have not already turned it in.
