It’s Time to Plan for Summer Opportunities for Gifted Children Mariam Willis, NAGC Parent Outreach Specialist
At camp, when children make new friends and explore the world around them magic happens. In an environment created just for them, children learn real-life skills, develop self-esteem, and gain a sense of independence and community. Whether children are exploring, conquering new heights, or becoming part of a camp family, they are creating memories that will last a lifetime. NAGC provides a list of summer programs, summer camps, enrichment programs, academic programs, and special schools that can meet the unique needs of gifted kids. Even though snow is still on the ground in several areas it is time to begin planning for summer opportunities for gifted kids. In order to match the interests, abilities, and developmental needs of your child to the opportunities offered by traditional recreational camps, athletic camps, and academic programs, you need to spend some time thinking about what you want for your child. Be sure to give your child the opportunity to talk about the kinds of activities that he or she finds fun, engaging, and rewarding. If you and your child decide that an academic summer program would be a good experience, here are several factors to consider as you choose the program. Find out more about how to choose a summer program here. Once you have decided on an appropriate option for your youngster, you will need to make sure that the facilities, environment, personnel, and camp philosophy are also suited to your child's needs. Important questions to consider when choosing a program are available here. With careful thought and consideration, it is possible to make exploration of new areas, focus on a passion and, as importantly, fun part of your child’s summer experience. The good news is you will likely find a match for your child, if you take the time up front to carefully consider what is most important.
