Wow! I can't believe we are down to the last month of school! Here's what's happening this month...
Curriculum
Language Arts: Students have been working on writing persuasive stories and reading books with persuasive themes. We are also reviewing and writing summaries. Most students have completed their "Bare Books" and will be sharing them with each other in the classroom.
Grammar: We are working on new skills and reviewing skills including plurals with s, es, and ies; using commas in a series; adjectives; using the possessive s and making plural possessives; r- influenced vowels; and reading words with vowel pairs.
Math: Students are learning about division by using pictures and repeated subtraction as strategies to sort items into equal groups. They are also reading thermometers with scales of one, two, and five degree increments.
Science: Our focus this month is life cycles. Students have planted lima beans, marigolds, and peppers and are observing their growth. We are raising Painted Lady butterflies too. We have watched larvea become bigger and bigger caterpillars, and they are now in the chrysalis stage. We are patiently waiting for our butterflies to emerge!
Health: Summer safety procedures for sports and recreational activities
Field Day
Field Days wil be Wednesday, May 11th for K-2 and Friday, May 13th for 3-5. Students will be outside for a large part of the day, so please have them dress appropriately for the weather. Some stations involve water activities, so all students should bring a change of clothes. Please have your child wear tennis shoes for field day activities.
Accelerated Reading Program

Second grade will have their end of the year party on Monday, May 23rd, from about 12:45-2:00. We will be starting right after lunches. Our party will be held on the First/Second grade playground. All parents are welcome to attend.
Early Release
Please note that we will be on an Early Release schedule on May 24th and May 25th. Students will be dismissed at 1:30 pm.
Special Thanks!
Thank you so much for all your support during the school year. I appreciate all the help you have given me and your children. You have been great helping your children keep up with homework, reading daily, book reports, and special projects. I also appreciate the generosity you have shown by helping out in the classroom and by sending in items we have needed. Mrs. Martz and Mr. Gibbs did an excellent job teaching Junior Achievement lessons, and Mrs. Wieskopf did an amazing job as our room mom this year. I have enjoyed teaching your children and will miss them next year as they move on to third grade. Have a wonderful and safe summer!
