October News

It is hard to believe that it is October! The students have been working very hard, and I am very proud of them! October is going to be a very busy month.

Here are some dates to remember:

    Oct. 9th- 5:30- 8:00  K-2 Brewster's Night for Relay for Life

    Oct. 18th- Picture Day

   Oct. 20th- Mtn. View's Fall Festival- 12:00- 3:00

    Oct. 22nd- report cards go home

    Oct. 22-26- Mtn. View Book Fair and Red Ribbon Week

        Oct. 25th- Book Reports due- Detailed information was sent home on Monday, along with the constructuion paper.

    Oct. 26th- 2nd grade field trip to Funk Heritage Center- This field trip goes along with our new Georgia Standards for social studies.

   Oct. 29th-2nd grade will see a performance of "Firebird Ballet". Students must have their performing arts permission slip signed inorder to attend. I will send home another notice if needed.

Oct. 31st- Harvest Celebration

   Math- We will continue with addition with regrouping and money for the next two weeks. Please  continue to help your child  at home with these two skills.

Social Studies- We will begin our unit on Native Americans and Early Settlers.

Health- Nutrition

Science- Changes in the seasons

Book in the Bag Program- Students get new books every Thursday.

Thanks to Mrs. Johnson, Mrs. Geiger, and Mrs Wohlert for going with us to Turner Field. The students had a great time!

A big thanks to Mrs. Johnson, who volunteered to be our room  mom this year! Thanks also to Mrs. Wohlert and Mrs. Geiger who will  help us in the classroom this year, and they will help Mrs. Johnson during the year.

More September News

Here are a few important dates to mark on your calendars.

Wednesday, September 19th- Early Release

Thursday, September 27th- Paper Bag Puppets due- Students decorate a paper bag like a character from a book they have read this month. Directions were sent home with the bag. This is our first book report. Students must write the name of the book, author and a short summary of the book on a separate piece of paper.

Friday, September 28th- Field trip to Turner Field. Students are asked  to wear tennis shoes, as we will do a lot of walking. Students really enjoy this field trip.

October 5th- Reflections Entries are due.

Science- Our unit on matter begins this week. Students will be moving to all the 2nd grade teachers' classrooms to do some great experiments on matter. Please ask your child about the matter lesson they had each day.

Math- our unit continues with hundred charts,  patterns, skip counting and graphs. A great web site for math is  www.AAAmath.com

Book In The Bag Program has begun. Students keep the books for one week, then they will get a new book every Thursday. Students must take an AR test on their book before they return it. Most of these books are AR.

September Spotlights

I enjoyed meeting  all the families at Curriculum Night! Our class is off to a great start, and the students have been working very hard! I am very proud of them. Here are a few dates and information for the month of September:

Sally Foster orders are due by September 7th

Our first book report will be due on Thursday, September27th. The students will read a book on their level, and make a paper bag puppet of one of the characters in the book. I will send home a paper bag and more information about the project. Students should begin to select and read a book. We will go to the media center on Wed., Sept. 5th, and I will talk to the students then about this project.

Students have been taking AR tests. Second graders must get 12 points to be on the AR wall in the media center.

Math- Unit 1 continues with the study of place value, and reading, writing and comparing numbers to 100. Math facts have begun, and our first test on  +2's will be Friday, Sept. 7th.

Spelling- Please look in your child's agenda every Monday for their new list of spelling words. Please make sure that your child brings his/her red take home folder and agenda to school every day.

Social Studies- We wil continue to study communities, maps,  and globes.

Science- We will have great unit on matter. The students will rotate to all 8 second grade classes, where they will perform  exciting experiments about matter.

Book in the Bag Program will begin the week of September 17th.

Welcome Back

    We had a great first week of school! I enjoyed meeting all the families at Sneak- A- Peek, and I look forward to Curriculum Night when I can explain the programs and procedures that we use in 2nd grade.

    Our class has been busy building our classroom community. The students are learning to work together because we are all part of the same team. The media center will open the week of Aug. 20th, and students will be able to check out books after our library lesson on Aug. 22nd. Students will also be able to take AR tests after Aug. 22nd. Students may take AR test every morning before school, during center time, D.E.A.R. time( independent reading) and after school.

During the month of August our class will be studying the following:

Reading: reading assessments, shared reading about working as a team

Spelling- Sitton/ Open Court Phonics

Math- number sense, addition and subtraction without regrouping

Social Studies- maps and globes

Language Arts-writing a narrative paragraph,  and writing a letter

Important dates:

Tuesday, August 28th- Curriculum Night for K,1,and 2
