May Memories

   It hard to believe, but we only have a few days  left until the end of this school year! We will be very busy until the last day of school. I will be giving many assessments during the next two weeks, and attendance is very important.

 The students worked very hard during the CRCT tests and I am very proud of them.Thanks to all the parents who brought in healthy snacks for the students.

Reading-  We will continue to read non fiction books about animals, and life cycles. We finished reading Judy Moody Saves The World, and the students really enjoyed this book. Book in the Bag  Program is over and I want to thank all the families for helping their children read, retell,  and summarize the books each week. I will be giving the 3 reading assessments during the next two weeks. Please continue to encourage your child to read every night, and to practice the reading strategies they have learned this year. It is important that they do not forget these skills during the summer.

Language Arts- Students will continue to write paragraphs that respond to literature

Math- Review for the the  4th 9 weeks assessment, and we will take the Math IMI on May 12th. We will continue to work on problem solving skills, making change, multi-digit addition and subtraction with regrouping, multiplication, and division until the end of the school year.

Science- We will continue our unit on life cycles. The students have really enjoyed this unit. Ask your child the names of the 10 butterflies that our class released.They were very excited that all 10 caterpillars hatched!

Social Studies- We will review spending and saving money and ways goods and services are allocated.

Technology- Students will type a paragraph on an animal's life cycle and insert clip art.

May 6th- Boosterthon Fun Run rescheduled due to rain

May 8th- all library books due back to Media Center, last day to take AR tests

May 11th- Please come and watch your child run laps at the Boosterthon Fun Run- 2nd grade will run laps from 11:00- 12:15 ( laps are very small)  We are all very excited about the Boosterthon!

May 11th- AR picnic during our lunchtime- (changed to 12:30- 1:00)

May 12th- Math assessment for the 4th 9 weeks

May 13th- K-2 field day- If you have volunteered to help, please be at school for 8:00am

May 15th- Students will read their Bare Books to other 2nd grade students.

May 18th- Parents are invited to the classroom from 8:15- 9:00. The students will read their Bare Book and share  their porfolio with their family. Refreshments will be served in the classroom.

May 19th- Students wll take a writing assessment- respond to literature

May 20th- End of the Year Celebration- 12:45- 1:45- The room moms are planning this fun event!

May 22nd- Last Day of School

April News

 I hope that everyone had a wonderful and relaxing spring break! April is a short but extrememly busy month. The  Biography Timelines were excellent. The students did an aewsome job! They knew many facts about "their person" and they were able to answer questions from the other students about their Timeline.This was the last book report of the year! Thanks to everyone who turned in a completed moon calendar! The best way to learn the phases of the moon is to actually look at the different phases during a month. I think the students enjoyed this unit in science.

 

Reading- Book in the Bag will continue until the last week in April. Please continue to have your child read for 20 minutes every night. We will be reading books about different Life Cycles. I have just finished reading the book Ginger Pye to the students. It is a great book and they really enjoyed it. Students also took the AR test and received 9 points if they passed the test. They were really excited! We will begin reading, Judy Moody Saves The World. It is about recycling and doing things to save our environment, and Judy Moody is a very funny character.

 

Language Arts- We will be writing paragraphs that are a response  to literature. Students will also be making "Bare Books". I will definitely need some moms or dads to help us with this project. I will send an e-mail asking for help after the CRCT.

 

Social Studies- Students will learn about spending money and saving money.

 

Science- We will study life cycles of different living things. We will open a seed, plant a seed, look at fungi, hatch butterflies,  and look at tadpoles. This is a great unit and the students usually enjoy learning about life cycles.We began this unit with our field trip to the

Chattahoochee

Nature

Center

. It was a rainy day but we were able to touch a snake, look at vultures, a beaver, hawks, and walk along the trails. Our Naturalist told us many interesting facts about the plants and animals that live in

Georgia

.

 

Math- We will continue to learn how to multiply, make arrays,how to read a multiplication chart, divide things into groups, add and subtract 3-digit numbers with regrouping. The students will not memorize multiplication tables in 2nd grade. They will do this next year.

 

Technology- We will use the Smart Board in the computer lab when we use Kidspiration to make arrays and webs about the different life cycles.

 It's March and spring will soon be here! We will begin our 4th nine weeks of school very shortly. This year is going by very quickly. The Friends Play was wonderful! The students did a great job and they were excited to perform for their families.

Thanks to Mrs. Cody for teaching Jr. Achievement to our class. The students are enjoying the lessons.

Please continue to have your child take the practice tests for the CRCT. Students may take any of the tests that have been assigned to 2nd grade.CRCT will be given the week of April 20th.

Our in house field trip, Star Lab was wonderful! The students learned a lot about the stars and constellations. We are looking forward to our next field trip to the Chattahooche Nature Center.

Math- We will take the assessments for fractions, making change, measurement, and place value the week of March 9th. The math IMI test will be given on March 12th. Please help your child review these skills.  Continue to practice math facts to 20, as fluency is importaant in 3rd grade. We will begin  the 4th nine weeks with our unit on multiplication. The students will make arrays and learn that multiplication is repeated addition. I have sent home the information to access the math textbook online, www.eharcourtschool.com. Students will use the username I sent home and the password is bergeron.

Reading- The Book in the Bag Program continues. Please make sure that your child reads 20 minutes every night. We will read biography books this month. The book report this month is a timeline on the life of a person that your child has read about. The timelines are due Thursday, April 2nd. We will practice timelines in class and each child will make a timeline about their life. I have sent home a sheet with more specific directions.

Language Arts-  We will continue to review homophones, antonyms, synonyms, homographs, contractions, plurals and possessives. The 4th nine weeks students will be writng paragraphs that respond to an author.

Science- We will finish our unit on the Sun, Stars, Earth, Moon, Shadows, and Seasons the week of March 9th. Please continue to look at the moon and complete the moon calendar. Please return the calendar on Wed. April 1st.  During the 4th nine weeks we will study Lifecycles. I have sent home the information to access the science textbook online, www.thinkcentral.com. Students will use their student number, in their agenda, as the username, and the password is bergeron.

Social Studies- We have finished our unit on government. I have sent home the information to access the social studies textbook online, www.eduplace.com/eservices. The student username is cobbstudent2 and the password is password.

February Events and News

 I enjoyed meeting all the families during conference week.Thank you for your support.
    The book reports for January were awesome!  Two students wrote a letter to the author, one student wrote an advertisement, two students made puppets, and 10 students made dioramas. Everyone did a great job! I could tell that the students practiced their presentations at home. This really did help because they were very much at ease giving their oral presentation. Did you enjoy reading the persuasive stories? The students did a great job writing these paragraphs.
Our class needs your help. We are low on a few needed supplies, and we would appreciate any  supplies that you could send in to help us. We need the following : #2 pencils, hand sanitizer, boxes of Kleenex,and packs of  loose leaf paper ( college ruled).
   February is going to be a short but very busy month.

 

Reading- Book in the Bag continues, reading comprehension homework every Monday.
Writing- Persuasive paragraphs

February Book Report- Character Parade- Students read a book on their level and they dress up like a character from the book. We will have a Character parade on the 2nd grade hallway the last week in February. There will not be any written work required for this book report. Students will talk to the other students about the book they read and their character. Please keep the "costumes" simple, such as; a hat, sunglasses, or a prop to represent their character. More information will be sent home shortly.

Happy New Year!

I hope that everyone had a great winter break!   I am excited about coming back and beginning the 3rd nine weeks. We have many new concepts to learn this nine weeks. I am looking forward to meeting all of you during parent- teacher conferences at the end of this month.

November News

 We are in the second nine weeks of school already! The students are working hard, and we have many concepts to learn this nine weeks.

The students presented their October book reports to the class, and they did a great job! The reports are in the hallway near our classroom, if you would like to see them.

Thanks to Mrs. Berger and Mrs. Lundhagen  and Mrs. Olszewski for planning the fun fall centers for our class. The students had a great time!

Math- We have finished with telling time, and we are learning subtraction with regrouping. This is a difficult concept and it requires a lot of practice.

Reading- Book In the Bag Program continues, please make sure that students read for 20 minutes every night.  After your child has read the book, please ask him/her to retell you the story. This is a great reading strategy. My goal is to have all 14 students on the 12 AR wall this nine weeks. Eight of our students are on the AR wall already! Students are working on their new goals for this nine weeks. Please ask them to show you their goal!

Language Arts- Students will be writing informational paragraphs this nine weeks. We began by writing simple directions, using transitions words, first, then , next, and finally.

Spelling- Please continue to have your child practice words that were missed on the spelling tests. Words are reviewed all year, especially, there, their and they.

Science- Energy and Motion/ Pushes and Pulls- Students will rotate to different classrooms, where they will complete some fun activites to explore and investigate energy and motion.

Social Studies- Students will read about and discuss the lives of historical figures in Georgia history, James Oglethorpe, Mary Musgrove, and Tomochichi.

October News

   It is hard to believe, but this week is the end of our first nine weeks! The students have been working very hard and I am proud of them! Ask your child if he/she met their goal for this nine weeks.Their goal is written on the back of their red take home folder.

      Thanks so much to Mr. & Mrs. Keller, Mrs. Cody and Mrs. Steinberg for making cookie cakes in the shape of Georgia. The students had a wonderful time decorating the 5 different regions of Georgia. Then they were able to enjoy the delicious cakes! Thanks also to Mrs. Cody and Mrs. Lundhagen for helping the students with the decorating.

    The students did a great job with their character puppets! The oral presentations were  very good and I could tell that they practiced at home.

What's the Matter?- Students will be rotating to other 2nd grade teachers this week to learn more about changes in matter. We have some fun lessons planned, so please ask your child what they learned about matter.

Math-  We will finish addition with regrouping this week. Then we will begin subtraction with and without regrouping, problem solving and telling time to the nearest five minutes and minute. We will also continue with counting money, and use dollar and cent symbols as well as decimal notation.

Reading- phonics, guided reading, reading workshop, and Book In the Bag will continue.

Writing- Students will write informational paragraphs.

Social Studies- Historical figures of Georgia and their contributions.

Science-Energy and Motion

Specials- Our class will now be squaded with Mrs. Lang's class and Mrs. Montejo's class. We will now be on a 5 day rotation. I will send home new calendars. We will not have computer lessons with Mrs. Newhouse this nine weeks.The students will go to the computer lab with me, and I will integrate the curriculum using technology.

September Spotlights

        The students have been working hard and we are off to a great start! There are several changes this year in 2nd grade. We have new report cards, new Social Studies books and workbooks, new Science books and workbooks, and new non fiction guided reading books to integrate the Science and Social Studies Curriculum. I am excited about the new Social Studies Curriculum and the new materials that are availabe to us. Please ask your child about these new books.

   During September we will be studing the following :

Math- number sense, counting money, addition with and without regrouping

Reading- Book in the Bag Program will begin. New books will be given out every Thursday. Most of the books are AR and students are encouraged to take a test after they are finished reading the book.

Language Arts- Narrative writing

Social Studies- Creek and Cherokee Cultures

Science- Matter

Computer Lab- keyboarding
