SPRING FLING

Spring Fling is on the PTA calendar for Friday, April 22, 2011. It was changed right after it went to print. It is Friday, April 29,2011, from 6:30 PM until 8:30 PM.

April

CRCT

CRCT testing begins Tuesday, April 12^th and continues through Monday, April 18^th.  Reminder: the building is closed to parents and other visitors until all classes have completed testing each day, which will probably be close to noon.  Please see that your child gets plenty of rest, eats a hearty breakfast, and brings a nutritious snack during testing.  I appreciate your support!

 

Math

We will continue to study long division and multiplication using the distributive property.

 

 

Social Studies

We will finish learning about Thurgood Marshall, Lyndon B. Johnson, and Cesar Chavez.

 

Science

We will continue our study of heat and magnets.

  

Wellstar will be back again the on Friday, April 22 to present their “Wheel Wise” program on bike safety to the students.

 

We look forward to April 27 for  our field trip to the Wright Environmental Center.  More information on our trip will go home soon.

 Standards

Math:M3N5.c  Understand the fraction a/b represents a equal sized parts of a whole that is divided into equal sized parts.

M3M2.b  Measure to the nearest ¼ inch ½ inch and nearest mm in addition to previously learned inch, foot, yard, centimeter, and meter.

M3N5.d Know and use decimal fractions and common fractions to represent the size of parts created by equal divisions of a whole.

We are working in many centers developing hands on projects to show our understanding of fractions, fraction decimals, and measurement.  If you want to challenge your child using these concepts try these activities at home:

Reading

ELA3R3 The student uses a variety of strategies to gain meaning from grade-level text.

We have been taking notes from non-fiction texts when researching animals. 

Writing -- ELA3W1 The student demonstrates competency in the writing process.

We have been  researching adaptations of plants and animals and working on  a poster project. 

Science– S3L1b Identify features of green plants that allow them to live and thrive in different regions of Georgia.

S3L1c Identify features of animals that allow them to live and thrive in different regions of Georgia.

S3L1d Explain what will happen to an organism if the habitat is changed.

We have been studying adaptations of plants and animals.  The students will use this information to determine why it’s important for plants and animals to have adaptations and what would happen if their habitat were to change.

Math:

January is dedicated to understanding decimals (0.3), decimal fractions (3/10) and common fractions (1/2).  We will model addition and subtraction of fractions with like denominators.  There are so many fun hands on activities we will do.

 Language Arts:

We will be working with non-fiction text in Reading this month.  We will work on using text/graphic features (titles, headings, table of contents, photos, captions, diagrams, charts, index, and glossary) to gain meaning from the text.   

Our focus in grammar is verbs and adverbs. 

We are writing informational pieces that include relevant facts, examples, and details from a variety of resources.

Science:

In science we will focus on differentiationg between the different regions of Georgia (mountains, marsh/swamps, coast, Piedmont, and Atlantic Ocean).  We will study certain organisms that live in these habitats and what adaptations they have to live in their habitat.  We will explain what happens to Georgia plants and animals if their habitat is changed.

Oh my!  It’s already December.  I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving.  I hope that you had good quality time with your family to have fun and relax.  The year is half way over!  These next three weeks are going to fly by.  We have so much to do before the end of the nine weeks.

The PTA and Parent/Family Involvement Committe will be sponsoring a workshop by Jeff Dess, a prevention/intervention specialist with Cobb County School System, on November 8th. The workshop, titled Teasing, Bullying and Bystander Strategies: What Everyone Needs to Know, will be offered twice: 11:30am-1pm in the 1st grade hall, and 7pm-8:30pm in the media center. Drinks and desserts will be provided at both sessions--feel free to bring your own meal. Childcare will be provided in the evening session. Contact Paige Conner at jpconner@charter.net to reserve a spot. The class with the highest parent participation will win a prize!!

PTA PLAY – 3rd Grade Information
Back by popular demand! The PTA is pleased to offer a FREE drama opportunity for students in kindergarten through fifth grade. Glenn Case has written an original play entitled “Monster Arts in the Mountain View Zone.” Auditions begin the week of November 4th and the play premiers on Friday, February 11th at our PTA evening event, Arts for Life!
While we would love to accommodate every interested student, our cast must be limited to ensure a safe and worthwhile experience. Please prepare your child that not all students auditioning will receive a role in the production (Last year over 220 students auditioned!)
Forms can be printed from the Mountain View Website.  Click on PTA and choose the form for third.  They need to be turned in by Wednesday, Nov. 3rd.

Coat Drive

Community Outreach and Community Kids Club are sponsoring a coat drive during conference week - October 18 - 22. Please donate your children's gently-clean used coats, hats, gloves. Boxes will be outside the cafeteria. All dontations will benefit local needy Cobb Schools.
